Shane MacGowan’s wife Victoria says he was ‘determined to live’ before death

The Pogues singer Shane MacGowan dies aged 65

After the death of her husband last week, Shane MacGowan’s wife Victoria Mary Clarke has revealed the singer was “determined to live” before he died following his battle with encephalitis. The Pogues frontman had recently been in intensive care after the diagnosis last December with the serious condition in which the brain becomes inflamed.

Victoria took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share memories of her beloved husband, along with a picture of the star from his hospital bed. She wrote: “It’s so hard to believe that someone could be vibrant and beautiful and so determined to live only a few days ago. But so many people are losing loved ones all over the world.”

Despite experiencing her own grief, Victoria concluded: “My prayers are for all of you guys as Shane’s would be.” She also shared a second snap for her 38.2k followers to see, with the Fairytale of New York crooner smiling for the camera prior to his death.

She captioned it: “Shane was always able to smile right until the last and his smile had a way of lighting up everyone around him no matter how much he was struggling or in pain. I hope this smile can still work its magic @poguesofficial @ShaneMacGowan.”

Shane’s fans rushed to the comment section as they continued to send their heartfelt condolences to Victoria.
