Dame Sheila Hancock has said she hasn’t been “in awe” of any big names she’s met, including King Charles, as she just views stars as ordinary people.
In a conversation with Gyles Brandreth on his Rosebud podcast, the actress was asked who the first person she found “extraordinary” was during her lengthy career in the showbiz world.
As she tried to think of names, the 90-year-old said: “Do you know, I’m ever so unimpressed by people, I really am, I always sort of have been.
“I don’t know why that is, that’s curious isn’t it? Because I’ve got such an inferiority complex.
“But no I can’t think of anybody, I met [Laurence] Olivier, Noel Coward came round once.”

When asked if they were “charming” in person, she replied: “Absolutely lovely.”
Reflecting on who else she had encountered, Sheila added: “I remember Princess Margaret’s eyes is that impressive?
“I mean, what is now the King, I’ve met several times and I haven’t thought, ‘Oh My goodness, you’re royal’.
“I just think he’s a very nice funny man.
“It sounds so cocky not to have someone who I really venerate,” she added.

Sheila is no stranger to a royal meeting, with one of her most recent encounters being with Prince William.
The Duke of Cambridge honoured the actress with her Damehood for services to drama and charity back in 2021.
Discussing the moment with Radio Times Magazine last year, she said: “Prince William was a little bit scared because he hadn’t done it for two years.
“But it was all so gentle and friendly, and everybody was treated with respect. I thought it was lovely.”
The Doctor Who star went on to say she didn’t feel like she deserved the honour, but that the ceremony was “an enchating day”.
On the day of receiving her Damehood, she said: “Up until now I hadn’t believed it was going to happen.
“I knew a year ago and I thought ‘It’s all been a terrible mistake’. But now I’ve got the badges I’m beginning to think, ‘Oh, well maybe that did happen I am a Dame.
“It is just curious, quite honestly, it’s a great honour, I’m extremely grateful to the people who decided I should have this because I always think it’s recognition of your profession and in my case some of the charities I represent.”
