Sinéad O’Connor‘s final text messages to friends were a concerning and heartbreaking mix of jubilantly happy and despairingly sad moments. That’s according to singer and political activist Bob Geldof, at least.
Geldof (pictured above alongside Sinéad at a 2020 event) was a longtime friend and collaborator with Sinéad. The Live Aid founder knew the late Irish performer for nearly all of his life. In fact, as the Irish Examiner has noted, the duo first met back in their childhoods, when they grew up in the same neighborhood and took the same bus to school.
Thus, when news first broke of Sinéad’s death last week at 56 years old, it hit Geldof hard. Of course, he wasn’t the only one affected by the Irish recording artist’s demise. The entire world has been mourning her loss. But for longtime pals like Geldof, the Nothing Compares 2 U singer’s death has been another level of heartbreak.
So when Geldof went to perform at the Cavan Calling Festival in Cavan, Ireland on Saturday night, he wanted to share some of his final memories of the singer. According to The Independent, the 71-year-old singer explained to concertgoers that he’d been communicating with Sinéad nearly right up until the end:
“She was a very good friend of mine. We were talking right up to a couple of weeks ago.”
With the audience quietly and sadly mourning O’Connor’s passing, Geldof went on to reveal that her final texts to him were a mix of happy and sad. He said:
“Some of the texts were laden with desperation and despair and sorrow and some were ecstatically happy. She was like that.”
Geldof also recalled how helpless he felt after first learning of O’Connor’s death — via the internet.
Lamenting how little there was for him to do amid the flurry of online reports over her passing late last week, he told the Cavan Calling crowd that he’d been busy reminiscing in the last few days with old videos of her performing:
“Some of us watched her this afternoon on the web, and we were just speechless on how beautiful, how brilliant she was.”
Amen.
Of course, much about Sinéad’s death in London last week still remains very private.
After her passing was first revealed in media reports late last Wednesday, her family sent out a statement to BBC News and others requesting privacy to grieve in the aftermath:
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
Since then, London officials have indicated that they do not believe her death to be suspicious at this time. Furthermore, the city’s coroner’s court will soon carry out an autopsy to get more answers about it.
Clearly, her close friends and fellow musicians are hoping for the same.
