Olga Carmona took the Spanish women's football team to victory in the nail-biting final of FIFA Women's World Cup on Sunday, but just after the match, she was informed that her father, Jose Verdasco, had died.
The 23 year old scored a goal against England in the first half of the game, which took place in Australia, and the goal eventually won La Roja the tournament, with England failing to score.
There were jubilant scenes as the Spanish team celebrated, with Olga seen with tears in her eyes as she took in the magnitude of the history-making win.
But heartbreak was to come for the football star, as it was confirmed by the Royal Spanish Football Federation that Carmona had been told the devastating news that her father had died after the match.
A statement from the RFEF on Sunday evening read: "The RFEF deeply regrets to report the death of Olga Carmona's father. The soccer player learned the sad news after the World Cup final.
"We send our most sincere hugs to Olga and her family in a moment of deep pain. We love you, Olga, you are the history of Spanish football."
A cause of death has not been given.
Olga has made no official statement or mention of her father's death on Instagram, however, she did post a snap of herself after she scored her goal, as she lifted her shirt to reveal the word 'Merchi' drawn on the one beneath.
There was a very poignant reason for this, as Olga revealed after the match: "I dedicate my goal & this victory to my best friend, who recently lost her mother."
It appears that, at the time of Olga's words, she was unaware that her own father had passed away.
Words of support for Olga have poured in from around the world, with many football fans rushing to Twitter.
One wrote: "Thoughts are with Olga Carmona and her family," whilst a second said: "Olga Carmona’s father has passed away. Condolences to her and her family."
A third Tweeted: "Sad news .. Rest in peace Olga Carmona father," and a fourth said: "Wow. Fate is cruel sometimes."
Olga is thought to have shared a close bond with her father and the rest of her family, including her mother, who she shares her name with, and her two brothers, Francisco, and Tomás, who are also football players.
According to reports, she even shares a tattoo on the wrist that symbolizes a mother hugging her daughter, which Olga always kisses after scoring.
