Tony Adams, 55, enjoyed a brief relationship with Caprice, 50, back in 1999, at the height of his success as a Premier League footballer. Although their romance didn’t last long due to a “lack of emotional connection”, Tony admitted that their physical compatibility could have “kept him in the relationship”.

Writing in his 2017 memoir, SOBER: Football. My Story. My Life, he said: “I don’t think it was purely physical – and there were plenty who would say I was punching above my weight.

“In the end, I knew I would have to end the relationship due to the lack of emotional connection…The honesty and sincerity I saw initially got lost behind the facade.

“I did have second thoughts – and there is always regret when a relationship ends. But I knew it was right to move on. Sex can be such a drug and could have kept me in the relationship.”

After Tony’s quotes recently resurfaced, Ulrika took to her latest column to commend the Strictly star, admitting she’s “always been partial to a bit of Tony”.

Continuing in The Sun, she explained: “It could be because he opened about his addiction to alcohol and, in my eyes, transformed himself from a hardman of football to an honest, vulnerable giant.

“And now that he’s tripping the light fantastic on Strictly, he’s revealed how sex with his ex, model, Caprice, was addictive.”

She then recalled a Channel 4 documentary she made 15 years ago – Ulrika…Am I a Sex Addict – which saw her investigate sex addiction and even led to her discovering that she has her own issues with intimacy.

While not attempting to overanalyse Tony’s comment, Ulrika said it was “good” to hear a man open up about such matters.

She continued: “In Tony’s case, I suspect, he has acknowledged that sex was a drug which always left him with enjoyable highs which then led him to be in constant pursuit of the next one.

“But for many sufferers the effects are not often about enjoyment or satisfaction but have a serious – and sometimes very dangerous – effect on their mental and physical well-being.
