Strictlys Zara in favouritism row as pro says she was saved due to followers

Strictly: Zara McDermott takes part in dance-off

Strictly Come Dancing hopeful Zara McDermott may have been saved by the judges due to her 1.8 million followers on Instagram, the show’s ex professional Brendan Cole has claimed.

Zara, 27, and Graziano Di Prima, 29, were saved by all four judges last weekend following a dance-off with Eddie Kadi and Karen Hauer.

Brendan, 47, believes the show may want to keep the ex Love Island star in the competition for as long as possible to help bring in a younger audience.

He told Sky Bingo: “I’m led to believe she has got a tonne of followers across her various social media platforms.

“The judges will like that, and the show will like that, because they always want to attract a younger audience.”

Brendan went on to say having a social media star is “great for the show” as it’ll mean “more followers” for them.

“Everything is measured by how many Instagram followers you have these days,” he continued.

“So the cynical side of me says they are going to keep Zara around because it means more interest in the show.”

The dancer went on to say he wasn’t a fan of the documentary maker’s Foxtrot routine and doesn’t know why she was saved.

He added: “I would 100 per cent have saved Eddie, but all four judges voted for him to go home, so maybe they saw something that I didn’t.”

It’s not the first time Zara has been embroiled in a favouritism row.

Earlier this week, a show insider told The Sun: “Bobby [Brazier] and Zara are very much seen as ‘BBC favourites’ by their Strictly co-stars.

“After she was saved there were more than a few eyebrows raised backstage.

Another source told the publication that Zara is “very much a golden girl for the BBC” and claimed there is “an element of jealousy” about her getting through to another week.

Despite the claims, a Strictly source told Express.co.uk: “All of the judges are hugely experienced individuals who judge on dance and dance alone in the main show and in the dance offs.

“Any conspiracy theories suggesting otherwise are simply untrue.”

This week for the Halloween special, Zara and Graziano will perform a Charleston in the hope of avoiding the dance-off.

Strictly Come Dancing continues this Saturday at 6.45pm on BBC One.
