In a worrying scene for Kansas City Chiefs fans, the 27-year-old quarterback is seen grimacing in pain with a knock to his troublesome ankle in the second quarter of the game.
AceShowbiz –Patrick Mahomes could be out of Super Bowl LVII earlier than expected. The 27-year-old left the field hurt in the first half of the highly-anticipated game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, February 12.
Patrick appeared to re-injure his ankle after his right ankle got locked in the turf as he was tackled by Eagles’ T.J. Edwards. He sustained a high ankle sprain in the Chiefs’ 27-20 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the divisional round of the playoffs, but assured all week that his ankle was feeling much better than it did before the Bengals game.
The quarterback was moving around on it well at the Super Bowl, galloping for an 8-yard run during the drive, until late in the half, when he was trying to evade pressure on third down. T.J. tracked him down from behind and spun him to the ground with 1:44 left in the second quarter.
The All-Pro quarterback lay on the field grimacing in pain and limped his way to the sideline. He was later shown in difficulty while his ankle was being evaluated by trainers on the sidelines. It’s unclear if he’ll be able to return to the game. Meanwhile, Chiefs backup Chad Henne, who led a 12-play, 98-yard touchdown drive on his only series against the Bengals, began to warm up on the Kansas City sideline.
The first halftime ends with Eagles taking 24-14 lead after late field goal.
Patrick is eying his second Super Bowl win after scoring his first victory with Chiefs in the 2019 season. He was awarded the Super Bowl MVP after leading his team to defeat the San Francisco 49ers in the Chiefs’ first Super Bowl appearance in 50 years at the time.
Meanwhile, this year’s Super Bowl marks the first time two brothers facing each other on the field in a Super Bowl. Future Hall of Famers Travis Kelce of the Chiefs and Jason Kelce of the Eagles are both aiming to win a second championship, but only one will take home the Lombardi trophy.
