Jonnie Irwin has said that he is yet to tell his three young children about his terminal cancer diagnosis as it would "confuse" them.
In an interview with HELLO! he explained: "I keep being asked, 'Are you going to tell them?' but tell them what?
"It would be horrible news that they'd have to get their heads around. And it would confuse the hell out of Rex – he's got a shocking enough day coming. Let's bury our heads in the sand for as long as possible."
Jonnie shares three boys with his wife, Jessica Holmes, 40, who he married in 2016: three year old Rex and twins Rafa and Cormac, two.
The former A Place in the Sun presenter was given the terrible news that he had lung cancer in August 2020, which has now spread to his brain.
The 49 year old was recently admitted to hospital, where he told his Instagram followers was getting "pain management" but that he hoped his visit was short.
"In hospital this week monitoring a changeover in my pain management regime. Fingers crossed I’ll be out in time to make an appearance on Sunday for this weekends @aplaceinthesunofficial LIVE event at @olympialondon in Kensington."
The dad of three has spoken of how he first noticed "weird gold spots" whilst driving out in Italy as he filmed the house-hunt programme, with a concerned colleague accompanying him to hospital.
He said that being told that he had cancer, that it was terminal, and that he had about six months to live "knocked the wind" out of him, and that it left him feeling "battered."
Jonnie recently spoke on the OneChat podcast, saying that he wanted to remain positive and "bury my head in the sand a bit" as he opened up about his near-death experiences.
"Positive for me is burying my head in the sand a bit," he added. "[My wife] Jess and I don't talk about it much and we've been close to death's door a few times now. Twice at least."
He recalled how telling his wife about the cancer was "brutal", and telling her: "I'm not going to be here anymore" was one of the hardest things he's ever had to do.
Despite not talking about the cancer, the pair have started to sort out aspects of life, such as finances, for when he is no longer here.
"Financially, we're slowly getting stuff in place, transferring account details and putting stuff in her name but being positive such an important factor. I do that by not talking about it too much."
