The real reason Henry Cavill is leaving The Witcher after three seasons

The Witcher: Official trailer for Season 3

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from The Witcher.

The Witcher returned for its third outing a few weeks ago with part two on the horizon but what fans really want to know is the reason behind actor Henry Cavill’s exit.

For the past four years, Netflix subscribers have been obsessed with Henry Cavill’s take on the iconic video game character, Geralt of Rivia.

He has played a major role in making the fantasy drama a success for the streaming service with a fourth and fifth series confirmed way in advance, back in August 2022.

But in an unexpected turn of events, Cavill announced a few months later that he wouldn’t be reprising his role as Geralt in the upcoming season.

Daily Express US has the lowdown on why Cavill decided to quit The Witcher after three critically-acclaimed series.

Why is Henry Cavill leaving The Witcher?

When Cavill announced his departure, he described it as “laying down my sword”, ahead of the fourth outing.

He didn’t go into any detail regarding why he chose to leave but it is strongly believed it was down to creative differences.

As a major fan of the book and video game series, the actor told Phistar in 2021 that it was vital the character had depth.

“It’s important for me to have the character be three-dimensional”, he said.

“And it’s tricky to do, as I was saying earlier, because there’s a certain vision and there’s a certain set storyline and plot.

“And so, it was about me trying to find Geralt’s place within that. All of my asks and requests were along the lines of just being faithful to the source material.”

Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich seconded this idea by informing The Hollywood Reporter: “A lot of the notes he [Cavill] was sending to me were about Geralt’s dialogue — could he, first of all, say more.

“Everybody came out of season one laughing and loving Geralt’s fuming.

“But Henry was saying that when you read the books you spend a lot of time in Geralt’s head. So how can we put that on the page?”

But fear not, The Witcher is still going to return for seasons four and five.

Instead, actor Liam Hemsworth will be taking over the role of Geralt from Cavill.

Hemsworth is probably best known for starring in The Hunger Games franchise, as well as being the ex-husband of Miley Cyrus.

The Witcher is available to watch on Netflix.
