Tony Bennett’s heartbreaking final advice ‘he never got to tell’ Amy Winehouse

Legendary crooner Tony Bennett has died at the age of 96 following a stellar career, which saw him receive a lifetime achievement award, win 20 Grammys and collaborate with some of the biggest stars in the world including Frank Sinatra and Lady Gaga.

However, many fans will also remember his friendship with the late Amy Winehouse, with a past interview revealing the heartbreaking advice the music legend didn’t get the chance to give the Back to Black singer before she died aged 27.

In March 2011, Amy and Tony recorded their smash hit Body And Soul together – just four months before Amy tragically died.

Five years after her death in 2016, late Jazz legend Tony shared the kind advice he desperately wished he had offered to her sooner.

Speaking to Insider at the time, he recalled the moment he heard she had died, describing how he was “so shocked” by the news.

Tony, who was a friend of Amy’s and concerned about her welfare, admitted the tragedy had left him in tears.

He remembered that after hearing she had been feeling run-down a few months prior to her death, the pair had enjoyed a “good conversation” together.

However, Tony never got the chance to tell Amy what he really wanted to say before it was “too late”.

“I was going to tell her to slow down and take care of herself, to enjoy the success and not let it ruin her,” he said.

“But I never got the chance to tell her, it was too late,’ he added.

Amy died of alcohol poisoning at her home in North London on July 23, 2011.

Today, fans are mourning the death of Tony, whom some of music’s greatest stars referred to as “the best singer in the business”.

The late star spoke about Amy in much the same way, saying: “I’d never heard anyone sing so well… A beautiful singer.”

Tony has released many memorable hits over the years, including songs like The Way You Look Tonight and (I Left My Heart) In San Francisco.
