PSA: Royal insiders would very much like the world to know that there was absolutely no shade intended by all the royal family members who missed the birthday party Prince Harry and Meghan Markle threw for their daughter, Lilibet. And that includes Prince William and Kate Middleton, who straight up left the country that day.
ICYMI, as Harry and Meghan celebrated Lili’s first birthday in Windsor, Will and Kate were in Wales with their own kids for a visit to Cardiff Castle. Given the well-established rift between Harry and Will, it wasn’t exactly shocking when there was speculation that the Cambridge family had purposefully planned the Cardiff trip to coincide with the celebration as an excuse to skip it. But, in good news for anyone actively rooting for reconciliation and harmony among the royal fam, this is apparently not the case.
So, if it wasn’t intentional shade or a ploy to get out of an awkward family moment, why did Will and Kate plan an excursion to Wales on their niece’s first birthday? It just kind of worked out that way, apparently. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
“It’s simply a coincidence they fell on the same day,” a royal source insisted to Entertainment Tonight. “There was no intended slight.”
According to The Sun, Harry and Meghan threw what sounds like a very adorable, low-key party Frogmore Cottage. The celebration reportedly included “picnic-style snacks,” as well as birthday party staples, like cake, balloons and games.
“It was a lovely do and had everything you’d expect from a child’s birthday party,” sources told the U.K. paper. “But there was no formal entertainment. The idea was for it to be very relaxed and casual, with people free to pop in and out as they wished. It was a nice opportunity for the other royal children to meet Lilibet for the first time. And as her first birthday is such a milestone, there was lots of discussion ahead of time about the presents that she would be given on the day. One idea that proved very popular was a £75 pink Volkswagen Beetle ride-on toy, which had been spotted in Selfridges.”
While Will and Kate missed the event, the guest list did reportedly include some members of the royal family, like Zara and Mike Tindall’s kids and Peter Phillips and Autumn Kelly’s daughters, as well as Harry’s BFFs Charlie and Tom Van Straubenzee, who are godfathers to Archie and his cousin Princess Charlotte, respectively.
