Crown Princess Mary, 51, tied the knot with Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark back in 2004. But what does her engagement ring look like?
Some royal wedding bands are traditional, some are understated, whereas others are more extravagant.
However, the ring Crown Prince Frederik gave to Mary Donaldson was a touching tribute to his motherland and more patriotic than anything else.
The colours of the Danish flag feature in the jewel in the form of an emerald-cut diamond and two emerald-cut ruby baguettes.
Given the poignancy of Mary marrying into the Danish Royal Family and renouncing her Australian citizenship, Frederik made a special effort to choose a gorgeous sparkler.
Mary started stacking the wedding band with her engagement ring after the royal nuptials in May 2004.
The engagement ring has undergone some minor changes recently. There are now two additional diamonds, one on each side of the ring.
This gave the ring greater weight, making it appear more fitting for a future Queen.
Mary’s ring has acquired new symbolic significance. Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, the twins she gave birth to in 2011, are now 12 years old.

As a result of this, Crown Princess Mary has had two more diamonds, in addition to the rubies, set into her engagement ring.
The couple’s four children, including the heir to the throne Prince Christian, now 17 years old, and Princess Isabella, 15 years old, are represented by the four side stones.
She typically matches the wedding band with the engagement ring, which is set in white gold.
Crown Princess Mary occasionally removes her wedding band and engagement ring in favour of an understated gold band made by the Danish jewellery brand Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen.
White and chocolate brown diamonds are used in the curved “Love Bands Ring,” which cost the Crown Princess £2,097.
Mary also sports a custom-made gold ring with colourful precious stones on her left hand by Marianne Dulong, a fine jewellery designer the Crown Princess also likes.
Crown Princess Mary frequently forgoes her engagement and wedding rings in favour of a more eye-catching ring on her right hand.
With a thick, domed band and pave diamonds, it seems bigger than her wedding band.
During the Danish Supreme Court’s 100th anniversary celebrations in 2019, Mary wore the larger ring. For this newer ring, her wedding set was once again missing.
Crown Princess Mary most likely leaves her bridal set at home for specific events since she enjoys wearing beautiful jewellery, which gives her the option to adjust her appearance to match her attire.
Frederik and Mary first connected at the Summer Olympics in 2000. Australian and European press outlets gave their official engagement in 2003 and subsequent wedding a great deal of coverage.
They presented the union as a contemporary “fairytale” love story involving a Prince and a commoner. On October 8, 2003, the couple became officially engaged.
