I'm a gypsy and people are surprised I work but we’re allowed to…I need to pay for my sunbed, nails & filler addictions | The Sun

A TRAVELLER woman has revealed that people are always surprised when they find out that she actually has a job and works for a living.

Suzy explained that the tradition of a gypsy woman staying at home and cooking and cleaning all day has become quite outdated, as many traveller woman now have jobs and earn their own income.

Posting on TikTok under the username @cuzinsuzy92, in one clip, we saw Suzy at work as she filmed herself cleaning.

She mimed along to an audio that sang: “I don’t like it, I don’t like it, I don’t like it here.

“Nobody likes it here.”

However, although Suzy explained that she doesn’t enjoy her job, she explained that she needs to work to pay for her beauty addictions.

She said: “Me wanting to quit every second but remembering I need to pay for my Redbull, vape, sunbed, nails and filler addiction.”

While Suzy didn’t explain what it is she does for a living, she then posted a follow-up clip, in response to a comment that read: “I thought traveller men pay for their wives so they don’t have to work.”

In response to the comment, Suzy explained: “Yes, traditionally the women are not really supposed to work, the men are supposed to provide for the wives.

“But fortunately for us, we are able to make some of our own decisions.

“I say some, some women from our community work. I know cleaners, beauticians, salon owners, some girls even own their own sunbed shops now, some women do raffles and work that way, some people sell clothing, do lip fillers, Botox, lashes.

“A lot of women work on social media now.

“Traveller women are getting a lot more opportunities now to work and have careers.

“There’s actually a woman on here who’s a lawyer and she’s a traveller.

“And then you’ve got the women who don’t do anything and their husband provides everything for them and all they've got to do is look pretty and shop.

“But no matter what kind of lifestyle you have – if you’re working or not working – it’s a choice to be made by that person.

“You have the option there to be able to go and work and if you want to do it then do it.

“If you don't and are happy for the husband to provide everything, that’s cool too.”

Suzy then opened up about her previous jobs, as she noted: “Personally, I’ve always worked.

“Even when we were moving around, I had a job.

“I worked in three different shops, so I worked in McColls, I worked in Superdrug and I worked in a Chinese restaurant, taking orders.

“I’ve also picked apples and pears, that was my first ever little job I had.

“I’ve worked in Triumph, a motorbike shop, I worked in Primark, in Cambridge, Domino’s pizza, I’ve worked in Mac doing make-up and I’m even a qualified lash tech.

“So I think it depends on the person – if you want to work, work, if you don’t, don’t. It is what it is.

“But that whole tradition of women having to stay at home and cook and clean all day is dead. That tradition is just dead.

“Not just because a lot of women don’t want to stay at home and cook and clean anymore, but if they are staying at home, they’re on social media.

“A lot of traveller women who do stay at home are working on social media, so yeah.”

Suzy’s clip has clearly shocked many, as it has posted just one day ago, but has quickly amassed 24.4k views.

It has 1,602 likes, 61 comments and 5 shares.

One person said: “I wouldn’t say the other ladies who aren’t officially employed “don’t work” cos cleaning, cooking, children etc are all hard work” to which Suzy snapped back “They ain’t employed are they, I never worked for 5 years, I never rolled around saying “I have a job.” It’s called cooking for my family.”

Another added: “My mam doesn’t work, me dad works, my mam’s job is cleaning up all day and looking after the children.”

A third commented: “I think being a stay at home wife and mother is a full time job, traveller women deserve the world and more.”

One gypsy woman noted: “That is more recent though, our women used to sell pegs, flowers, make lace and baskets whilst still being mums and wives.”
