WERE you under the impression that washing your hair every single day could be ultimately damaging for your locks, or make them greasier?
You wouldn’t be alone in your thinking, as the common hair myth has circulated for as long as we can remember.
But now one hair pro has shared how it’s a total misconception – and that some experts actually encourage you to lather up whenever you feel you need it.
Hair care expert Rachel Valentine lifted the lid on the mistake some people make – and explained the science behind it.
She began: “One of the main reasons that people don’t like washing their hair every day, or disagree with it, is because they feel that the hair produces more oils to replace the ones that it has lost.
“[Therefore] meaning that your hair is going to get greasy quicker – this just is not true.”

Rachel, whose helpful tips can be found on TikTok at @rachelvalentinehair, then explained:
“We need to think about why and how our scalp produces oils.
“Our scalp is just an extension of our skin, and the same glands that produce the oil on our scalp are the same glands that produce it all over our body and our face too.
“The level of oils that are produced is controlled by the glands, which is controlled by mainly our hormones, but also things like diet and age as well.

She added that some health conditions and medications can affect this too.
Rachel continued: “Just like we go through phases with our skin and having oily skin, we get that with our scalp too because of the things that are happening in our life that are out of our control.”
And she said using this knowledge you can now see why it doesn’t matter if you want to wash your hair once a day.
Rachel clarified: “Now when you understand why and how the oils are being produced, we can actually compare that to our skin.
“If you think about it, we wash our face and our body once – if not twice – a day. And our face doesn’t produce more oils to replace them.”
As long as you’re using good products, it’s absolutely fine to wash your hair every day
The social media influencer went on to say: “And it’s exactly the same with our hair as well.
“As long as you’re using good products, it’s absolutely fine to wash your hair every day.
“You need to do what’s right for you and you’ll also probably find that this will change throughout your life anyway.”
After she shared her eye-opening advice, some shared their own hair stories and how her explanation definitely worked for them.
One woman wrote: “Yes, I’m so glad I found you! I feel like I am benefiting from washing my hair more often because it means I actually look after it better.”
