I’m a pet expert – three things owners do that shorten your dog’s life | The Sun

A DOG expert has shared the three things owners do that could shorten the life of their beloved fur friends.

Following the pandemic, a number of people became dog owners which has seen an increase in searches on how to best look after your pooch.

Pet Lab Co (@petlabco) has a TikTok account featuring hundreds of videos about dogs from how to spot signs of depression and how to improve their gut health.

The account has over 11million likes and in a recent video one of the Pet Lab experts explains common mistakes made by dog owners.

According to the clip, dogs need their owners to stop doing three things that could shorten their life.

The first is to stop "neglecting daily exercise" which contributes to poor joint health, obesity, and mental health issues in dogs.

Some breeds are more active and energetic than others due to their working backgrounds which means they need a lot of exercise to be stimulated and have a good quality of life.

According to Outdoor Dog Adventures, the recommended amount of exercise per day for most dogs is between 30 minutes and two hours.

The website states that lots of barking and a reluctance to go into a crate could be signs that your pooch isn't getting enough exercise.

It is also key that dogs are taken for walks or exercise multiple times a day, and for many of them, a slow walk will not be enough.

The second mistake owners make that could negatively impact their dog's life span is "feeding them fatty table scraps."

A dog has a different digestive system to that of humans which makes a lot of human food challenging for dogs to digest.

Rich and fatty foods can make a dog vomit, have diarrhea and even develop more serious issues like pancreatitis.

Lastly, dog owners can no longer keep avoiding brushing their dog's teeth.

Failure to brush their teeth regularly can lead to plaque build-up, poor breath, and dental issues including periodontal disease which can cause tooth loss.

Pet Lab Co has posted a number of videos to help owners address and care for their dog's dental health.

In one clip, the company shows how to create dental treats with just two ingredients.

While these treats will benefit their dental health, they are not to be used as an alternative to brushing your dog's teeth.

The pet expert soaks carrot sticks in bone broth and puts them in the freezer.

These treats help with digestion, joint health, and the immune system due to the nutrients in the bone broth.

"The crunchy frozen carrots act as an excellent dental chew by abrasively rubbing the tartar build-up from your pup's teeth," the expert says.
