I’m a professional stylist – four fashion rules to follow to dress more elegantly | The Sun

YOU don't have to spend a lot of money to dress elegantly – though it doesn't hurt.

One professional stylist tells The U.S. Sun that if you're going to splurge on one thing, some items are more worth it than others – and looking elegant comes down to a few other important factors, too.

Tess Iandola is a stylist and closet organizer who has worked for Ralph Lauren and several luxury stores in Chicago and San Francisco.

While her career has been in luxury fashion, she says that spending a fortune isn't necessary for looking good.

"I truly believe anyone can look and feel pulled together," she says. "Confidence is always elegant!"

But a few other outfit upgrades can make you look more elegant, too.

DRESS FOR YOUR BODY

"Elegance is knowing your body type, working with what fits and flatters, and allowing someone to style you appropriately," says Iandola.

"If you can work with a stylist, be open to letting them help you revise some of your clothes and looks."

But you don't have to splash out a fortune on a personal stylist like the stars do.

"Most stores and boutiques offer these services," says Iandola.

"I always look at photos of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis for reference. She carried herself with such assurance and elegance."

SHOP FOR QUALITY

Dressing elegantly means "wearing good quality pieces with a mix of less expensive classics," says Iandola.

"Think Agnès B. T-shirts with a stunning blazer that you’ll own for years."

SPLURGE ON SHOES AND BAGS

"My dad always said, 'Your feet are your fortune,'" says Iandola.

"Allot more of your clothing budget on footwear," she says, but don't waste money by having a huge shoe collection that's all cheap.

"A few pairs of high-end shoes that work with anything are better than a closet full of 'weak' shoes that might last a season or two."

The same rule applies to handbags.

"Splurge," she advises. "The right purse will last for years and always look fashionable."
