WE’VE all been bopping along to Under The Sea following the release of The Little Mermaid last week.
And one superfan has decided to create her very own Ariel’s grotto in her bathroom.
Mel Hamblett, 34, from Gloucester, has been a huge Disney fan since childhood, with the iconic songs from the films sparking her love for musicals and theatre.
After eventually visiting Walt Disney World for the first time when she was 23, Mel found it such a magical escapism and wanted to capture reminders of that feeling in her own home.
Speaking to Ruggable Mel explains, “I’ve always loved Ariel.
“Her curiosity and passion made her such an admirable character, while the colour palette and music from the movie are so joyful, it’s always been my favourite.

“I even have a half-sleeve tattoo dedicated to different scenes in the movie, I love it so much.”
Whilst working full-time in communications, as well as being a mum and an interior influencer, Mel managed to transform her bathroom in just two weeks, spending less than £200 in the process.
“The biggest cost was the custom vinyl flooring which was around £80,” she says.
“The rest was paint, primer, vinyl and my own time.

“What really helped to keep the cost down was using what we already had, sprucing them up with paint to make them look new.
“For example, I painted our tiles with primer and paint, then sealed to protect them, finishing with a grout pen to ensure a fresh, clean look.
“I also spray painted our taps using primer, gold brake calliper spray and glitter spray which saved us hundreds compared to buying brand new taps and fittings.
“I upcycled mirrors, an old shelf and the bathroom sink unit with paint and seashell vinyl, and also installed a vinyl around the window to add a pop of mermaid pattern, too.”
But it’s not just the bathroom Mel has channelled her love for Disney in.
Throughout her home there are many references to her favourite Walt Disney films, including her garden and living room.
“While the mermaid bathroom is very explicitly a homage to Ariel, I like to try and incorporate Disney in more subtle ways around my home.
“We have a neon sign above our bed which says ‘who disturbs my slumber?’- a nod to the cave of wonders from Aladdin, as well as an expression of our lives with a young child.
“My son’s bedroom has a rainbow theme, but also includes a gallery wall of Pixar movie posters – he’s a huge cars and Toy Story fan, so it was a way of adding colour to the walls with a nod to his favourite movies.
“Our living room has custom art on the wall which says ‘look at this stuff isn’t it neat’ the opening lyrics from ‘Part Of Your World’ and photos from our trips to Disney Parks.
“We have a Ruggable rug in the kitchen with hidden Mickey Mouses on it, whilst the home office has a neon sign saying ‘to infinity and beyond’.
“And it’s not just the inside interior we have made Disney-themed. Our garden has a lot of tropical plants and coloured lights, which takes inspiration from Pandora and Adventureland.”
As an interior influencer, Mel has picked up many tips and tricks to make decorating easier.
She says, “Using collage apps to mock up mood boards of furniture or patterns before investing in them can really help ensure you like the vibe of the room before you put any paint on the walls.
“In a new build; the walls aren’t always great, so I always use low tack masking tape to ensure I get crisp lines without pulling off my hard work when the tape is removed.”
For any other Disney fans who are looking to transform their home, Mel has shared her top tips on how to capture the Disney essence perfectly.
“It depends on how subtle or bold you want to be with your Disney decor,” she says.
“People who know Disney tend to spot the references in my home, but I didn’t want to explicitly have Mickey Mouse everywhere, so it’s all about finding the level of Disney you’re comfortable with.

“Consider the Disney parks and hotels for inspiration. They are all so beautifully themed that it’s a great place to form ideas or colour palettes for rooms without being too obviously Disney.
“Instagram and Pinterest are also great places for inspiration, and I also use other influencers for inspo.”
