New mums share best places for baby 'basics' essentials – from M&S, Aldi, Asda & Tesco | The Sun

WHEN it comes to the weekly shop we all love to bag a bargain or two, but if you've just had a baby you barely have time to sleep, let alone shop around for the essentials.

So when it comes to baby basics like nappies and baby wipes, it means that you can miss out on savings.

Thankfully, there are plenty of mums and new parents who are only too willing to share their top tips and favourite stores to make your money go further when stocking up on essentials.

George Waterhouse from Dayze – a new family scheduling and social app – shares the best places to shop for certain products to make sure you're getting a bargain.

George says: "What seems to be a good deal in one place may often be better in another.

"That’s exactly what we found out when we asked the parents of babies in our Dayze community for their places and tips to help their baby budget go further.

"While you may think Asda is one of the cheapest places, Sainsbury’s and Tesco came out top on the own-brand nappies and wipes front.

"When we also compared some of the leading brands the Dayze community mentioned too, such as Pampers, the best deals differed per item, per supermarket, so it’s worth checking before you shop.

"From nappies, wipes, baby lotion and baby wash – the results may surprise you!"

Nappies

On average in the first year, a baby can go through between 2,000 and 2,200 nappies – and Tesco, Sainsbury's and Aldi own brands are all price matching at the moment.

George says: "Those who prefer convenience of disposable nappies said that Aldi is their main go-to for nappies.

"But what may surprise you is that many of the big supermarket brands are price matching Aldi at the moment. Win-win!"

And while Marks and Spencer does come out more expensive for baby essentials, many parents asked were surprised by how small the price difference actually is for some items.

M&S: Little Smiles pack of 36, £3.20 in Ocado, or £3.00 in store.

Asda: Little Angels pack of 56, £3.25.

Tesco: Fred & Flo pack of 56, £2.99.

Sainsbury's: Little Ones pack of 56, £2.99.

Aldi: Mamia pack of 56, £2.99.

In terms of big brand nappies, size three Pampers nappies baby-dry essentials pack of 50 are currently cheapest in Asda – £6.00 on offer from £10, then £10 in Tesco, £8.50 in Sainsbury's.

Baby wipes

George says: "The Dayze parents we asked said that while the Tesco and Asda wipes were good value, the quality of the Aldi wipes and Sainsbury's wipes were much better in terms of getting stains off and how easily it is to take them out the pack.

"A really good tried and tested parenting hack is to make a tiny cut either side of the opening of a pack of wipes to make it easier to pull out one wipe at a time!"

M&S: Little Smiles pack of 64 fragrance-free baby wipes, £1 in store.

Asda: Little Angels pack of 60 plastic-free sensitive wipes, 70p.

Tesco: Fred & Flo pack of 60 biodegradable fragrance-free wipes, 65p.

Sainsbury's: Little Ones pack of 60 wipes 65p.

Aldi: Mamia pack of plastic-free and sensitive pack of 60 wipes, 65p.

For a pack of 52 Pampers sensitive baby wipes, the cheapest for just one pack is currently Sainsbury's, at £1.10, in Asda they're £1.15 or 2 packs for £2, and Tesco is £1.25.

TOP TIPS

Dayze parents’ tips to get the best deals for your baby essentials…

  • Join baby clubs to get rewards, offers and freebies, for example Join the Boots Parenting Club free to receive eight points per £1 on baby products, and free gifts at key stages of your baby's development.
  • Get ready for weaning with a free Ella's Kitchen weaning pack, including vouchers in the post, and sign up for emails with lots of tips and offers.
  • Shop around – it may be easier to get all your essentials from one place, but it isn’t always cheaper.
  • Swap and share with friends: Babies grow SO quickly, which means it’s easy to have half-used packs of nappies left lying around. Swap or gift them to friends and family to save them money and you space!
  • Switch up your shops – instead of the supermarkets, try Poundland, Superdrug and Savers for deals.

Baby wash

For a price comparison on 500ml of baby head to toe wash, Aldi is the cheapest, and most of the other supermarkets are priced at £1.

M&S: Little Smiles gentle shampoo and conditioner 500ml, £2.50 in store.

Asda: Little Angels 500ml head-to-toe wash, £1.

Tesco: Fred & Flo 500ml head-to-toe wash, £1.

Sainsbury's: Little Ones 500ml head-to-toe wash £1.25.

Aldi: Mamia baby shampoo 500ml 95p – the cheapest.

For big brand Johnson’s baby bedtime bath (500ml) the price is the same in most supermarkets it's sold in, at £3.50 – but you can get a deal right now at Boots, for £2.

In Tesco it's £3.50, but with a club card it's cheaper, at £2.30.

George says: "Lots of parents we asked swear by this relaxing bedtime baby wash to calm and soothe little ones."

Baby lotion

For baby lotion, while Aldi is the cheapest, most of the other supermarkets are still cheap, priced at £1.

M&S: Little Smiles 500ml baby lotion, £2.50 in store.

Asda: Little Angels 500ml baby lotion, £1.

Tesco: Fred & Flo 500ml baby lotion, £1.

Sainsbury's: Little Ones 500ml baby lotion, £1.25.

Aldi: Mamia 500ml baby lotion, 95p.

For Johnson’s bedtime baby lotion 500ml, Sainsbury's is currently the cheapest, at £2.

Calpol

George says: "Calpol is every parent’s secret weapon for temperatures and teething!

"You’ll always find a bottle in the medicine cupboard.

"For a bottle of Calpol infant suspension 100 ml sugar-free, the price is the same in most supermarkets – but Savers is the cheapest at the moment."
