IT'S one of the most famous supermarkets in the country.
But have you ever wondered where Asda got its name from?
Well, people are just figuring out the reason the shop is called that – and it's all to do with a merger back in 1965.
Brothers Peter and Fred Asquith were running a butcher's shop in Yorkshire but, after a trip to America, saw the potential for an "under one roof" store.
They contacted the Associated Dairies company to pitch a partnership and when the merger took place, they decided to call it Asda – the As from Associated and Da from Dairies.
The origin of the name has come as a surprise to tonnes of people, after newsreader Alastair Stewart tweeted: "Without @Google, do you know what the name @asda derives from?"

"Nope!" another admitted.
Others shared their own understanding of the acronym, with someone else writing: "Wow! How many wrong answers can one post get?"
Lots of people did know the origin though, with some revealing they'd learned it through a pub quiz or training session.
