Diana, Princess of Wales was bound by royal style protocol like all other working members of the family, but it didn’t stop her from standing out with her fashion.
Just like her daughter-in-law, Princess Kate, Diana was almost always spotted wearing tights with her skirts and dresses – whether they were noticeable or not.
Though it’s not strictly stated that royal women must wear them, the custom arose from the influence of Queen Elizabeth II, who was never seen without a pair of nude tights.
This has continued with many current working royals, though the former Princess of Wales remains the most experimental with the shades she wore.
The late royal would often have tights custom-matched to her outfits, whether that be in a bold shade of red or a more classic black fabric.

On countless occasions, Diana stepped out in vibrant outerwear with sheer tights in a complimentary shade.
In February 1985, the late Princess donned a red suit and matching John Boyd hat while visiting Cirencester, UK.
The eye-catching outfit was completed with black detailing and accessories to contrast her crimson clothing.
Perhaps the most iconic all-red outfit worn by Diana was in April 1985, when she visited Florence in Italy wearing a red suit designed by Jasper Conran.
She teamed it with a white polka dot top, red tights and red shoes to create the most striking look.

It wasn’t just red outfits that Diana was seen matching her tights to either, in fact, she adopted the same style trick for more dainty pastel shades too.
In 1983 the late Princess debuted a floral quilted suit designed by Miss Antoinette, and a matching hat with netting designed by John Boyd while visiting Ballarat, Australia. She paired the statement co-ord with sheer white tights and shoes to match the occasion.
On the royal tour of Italy in 1985, Diana donned several statement pairs of tights in a very pale shade of pink to match various dresses.
Intricate details were another unique feature seen on several pairs of Diana’s tights, especially black ones.
Even when wearing the somewhat mundane colour, the royal fashion icon was sure to opt for styles with butterflies, exaggerated calf seams, or subtle bow motifs around the ankle.
The trend is yet to catch on with Kate, Princess of Wales and other royals like Princess Beatrice and Eugenie.
The women have not been spotted in bright tights as of yet, often favouring nude, black, or navy styles over statement shades that were loved by Diana.
