Kate, Princess of Wales wore a bold red dress for day four of Royal Ascot yesterday, and while many royal fans loved the stand-out colour, not everyone was as keen on the accessories that were chosen. In particular, the earrings and clutch bag raised a few eyebrows.
Her dress was bespoke by Alexander McQueen and featured a V-neck which crossed over into a waistband and long sleeves with a small shoulder puff and gathered cuff.
The dress was midi in length and had an A-line shirt with gathered to add shape to the silhouette.
Kate also chose a new Philip Treacy hat in the same shade of red, and a new pair of Jennifer Chamandi Lorenzo 105 Red Suede Pumps – but wore them without the strap – which are priced at £580.
She carried a new but vintage Hermes Rio Red Leather Clutch and a pair of Sezane Esmee Gold Brass Earrings which she debuted yesterday, despite them being from a past collection.
As for why fans disliked Kate’s earrings and a clutch bag, some commented on her overall look being “finished” and “polished”, and the “costume-style” earrings didn’t fit in. The clutch bag was also a darker shade of red and the material looked “cheap”, some suggested.
@Jennfrazier5 opined: “The earrings ruin it for me. There is a time and place for costume jewellery and this is not it.”
@amie_oz_ldn said: “Love the dress, hat and shoes. Kate looks stunning! I feel the earrings don’t work with the style of everything else. They look like cheap fun casual lunch earrings.”
@Ashnbednar wrote: “Love the dress, the colour, especially the hat! But the Sezane earrings are far too casual & boho for this occasion & outfit choice IMO..”
@barb_bfd suggested an alternative pair of earrings already in the Princess’ jewellery box: “The earrings are awful! She has a lovely modern ruby set she wore in Poland that would have been perfect for this look. Hat and hair are fabulous! POW always looks beautiful.”
As for the bag, @miliczza commented: “She is gorgeous in red! But…The clutch is pure Disappointment.” Someone replied to this comment explaining: “It’s vintage Hermes, nothing disappointing about it,” and @miliczza added: “The clutch is fine, but not working with this outfit.”
Another chimed: “The clutch is hideous. Wrong red and looks plasticky.”
