During her 70th year on the throne, Queen Elizabeth II died at her beloved Balmoral Castle on September 8, 2022. The Queen had reduced her public outings in the final years of her life due to mobility problems and the Covid pandemic, but on occasion, she appeared wearing several key jewellery items from the royal collection.
The King George VI Victorian Suite
The Queen was last photographed wearing a tiara in 2020 for her official Canadian portrait.
In the snap taken by photographer Chris Jackson, the Queen donned a sapphire jewellery suite with incredible sentimental value.
The photographer captioned the photo on Instagram: “In the photograph, The #Queen is wearing her Canadian insignia as Sovereign of the Order of Canada and the Order of Military Merit.

“She is also wearing ‘The King George VI Victorian Suite,’ a diamond and blue sapphire necklace and earrings that were given to her by her father King George VI as a wedding present in 1947.
“The jewels date back to circa 1850; the matching tiara and bracelet were added to the suite in 1963.
“The Queen wore the sapphire suite in Canada during the 1990 Royal Tour.”
The stones of this suite perfectly match the colour of the robes of the Order of the Garter, and she often wore pieces from it throughout her 70-year reign.

George IV State Diadem and the Coronation Necklace
Although the Queen attended the State Opening of Parliament in 2021, she did so dressed in a lilac outfit and hat as it was scaled down due to Covid. The King filled in for the Queen for the event in 2022 while he was still Prince of Wales.
The last time the Queen wore full jewellery for the State Opening of Parliament was 2019 and she wore the Diamond Diadem, or the George IV State Diadem.
Adorned with diamonds and pearls, the gold and silver headwear has been worn by queens and queen consorts for centuries.
Roses, thistles and shamrocks feature in the diadem’s design, the floral emblems of the UK nations.
The Queen wore the historic piece at her coronation and State Openings of Parliament throughout her reign.
For a touch of extra regality, the Queen also wore the Coronation Necklace for her last State Opening before the pandemic three years ago.
According to the Royal Collection Trust, the necklace’s “22.48-carat diamond pendant is known as the Lahore Diamond and was presented to Queen Victoria in 1851”.
Pearl necklace
In her final photograph on September 6, two days before her death, the Queen shook hands with the new Prime Minister Liz Truss.
The Queen wore her traditional pearl necklace, a wardrobe staple throughout her lifetime, and it was fitting that she wore them for what would be her final public photographs.
She also wore a pair of pearl earrings and her diamond engagement ring from her late husband, Prince Philip.
