Like the late Queen’s sister Princess Margaret, Sarah Ferguson owned a stunning ruby engagement ring. The future Duchess of York debuted the ring in 1986 during a photocall with Prince Andrew at Buckingham Palace, shortly after their engagement was announced to the world.
According to jewellery experts, Sarah’s engagement ring could be worth “more than £65,000”.
Jeremy Hinds, Sales Director of jewellery experts at F Hinds, said: “Sarah Ferguson’s engagement ring features a large ruby surrounded by 10 drop-diamonds forming a flower pattern, arranged atop a gold band.
“Prince Andrew, who drew up designs for the ring himself, presented Ferguson with an engagement ring that was created by Garrard’s in London.
“The large Burmese ruby that forms the centrepiece of this engagement ring is said to have been inspired by the Duchess of York’s famous red hair.”
“While no official figure has been given, estimates at the time of the engagement placed the ring’s value at around £25,000,” he added.
“Accounting for inflation, this ring could today be worth more than £65,000.”
Sarah was pictured wearing the ruby ring well into the 2000s, years after she divorced Prince Andrew.
Sarah’s engagement ring remains one of her most famous jewels, along with her glittering York Tiara.

Mr Hinds added: “Sarah Ferguson debuted the York Tiara to the world following her wedding ceremony, a move seen to symbolise her new status as a Princess.
“But not just a wedding accessory, the Duchess of York continued to wear the tiara through her time in the Royal Family – and it even made appearances after her divorce from Prince Andrew in 1996.
“The York Tiara’s final public appearance was in 2001, and the piece has not been publicly seen since.
“It’s typical that a royal bride borrows a piece from the Queen’s personal collection, but the York Tiara was a break from custom, with the Duchess keeping it beyond the wedding ceremony.
“It’s thought that the tiara was a personal gift from her mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II.”
Royal fans hoped Sarah and Andrew’s daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie might wear the York Tiara when they got married.
But both opted for tiaras from their grandmother the Queen’s collection, with Eugenie donning the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara for her Windsor wedding in 2018.
Beatrice wore Queen Mary’s Fringe Tiara when she married Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in Windsor in 2020.
Poignantly, this was the diadem the late Queen chose when she married Prince Philip in 1947.
While they didn’t wear their mother’s tiara, one of the York sisters paid tribute to Sarah with their engagement ring.
Like Sarah’s ring, Eugenie’s features a central stone surrounded by a halo of diamonds.
Eugenie’s ring has a padparadscha sapphire rather than a ruby, but the design is very similar to her mother’s sparkler.
