A HOME renovator who bought a property that had been abandoned for decades has been thrilled and dismayed by some of its contents.
The home's fridge still had food in it, but the real surprise was found hidden away under a pillow.
This was not the usual house transformation story, however.
Maggie McGaugh's (@maggiemcgaugh) purchase included everything that was already in the house.
This included a fully-stocked fridge, tables, chairs, beds, a wardrobe of clothes, and even socks in slippers.
“Last year I bought a fully-furnished house that was abandoned for over 20 years," she said in her post.
“This home is next door to our vacation home, so we knew when it was about to be listed for sale," she explained.
Immediately, she saw the potential, bought it, and soon learned more about its history and why it was abandoned and left stuck in time.
“It was owned by the daughter of a wealthy man who invented part of a plane engine," she said.
“He was in poor health so she had this home built to take care of him.

“Unfortunately, he supposedly passed away after only having stayed here for a few weekends.
“The woman left the home fully furnished, paid the electric and water bills for over 20 years, and never returned."
In the intervening years, the house was cleaned and the yard was maintained.
But she decided to eventually donate it to a non-profit organization, which then sold it to Maggie.
The house held great promise and a few surprises.
She made a face as she steeled herself to open the fridge: “Yep, the fridge still works."
Inside, it was crammed full of food, untouched in two decades.
The beds were all fully made up with sheets and pillows. It was under one that she made an unpleasant discovery: a dead squirrel.
“Exploring the home was an adventure but renovating it has been just as fun.
“We’re getting closer to the final reveal of the completed home," she said.
Commenters found the background to the house a touching one.
“Such a bittersweet story. The home was built from love but hasn’t seen it in 20 years. Thank you for saving the home built with love,” said one person.
