We're a family of six and live on a bus – our teen son sleeps in the luggage compartment | The Sun

A FAMILY of six decided to sell their home and move into a bus so they could travel and spend more quality time together.

Tessa and Matt live on the bus full-time with their kids Sam, Lucas, Quinn and Hudson and their two dogs and pet snake.

Mum-of-three Tessa told Tiny House Giant Journey that after transitioning the kids to home-schooling their minds were "opened to a lot of freedom."

Matt added: "The mortgage, the job, we were giving out time away in order to meet the demands of living a tradition lifestyle and we didn't have any control over it."

So in a bid to spend more time with their kids and travel they sold their home and moved into a 40ft long bus.

The family spent £6,700 on the bus originally plus £17,600 on renovations, but it was all completely worth it for them.

Inside, the home on wheels looks just the right amount stylish and modern with purpose built furniture, including a family seating area where the kids can work and eat.

Matt made a pull out table that's big enough to sit the entire family and a couple of guests, the best part is when they're done the table can be neatly tucked away.

The kitchen is the perfect size and still has plenty of space to whip up some delicious food.

Tessa said: "In the kitchen we went with butcherblock counter tops and chose to paint the cabinets green to bring a little freshness and brightness into the space."

She added: "My husband custom built all of our cabinets and this is actually been my favourite kitchen out of any I've lived in, I feel like I've got more workspace than I've ever had."

Three of the four kids sleep in the bunk area where they each have a six foot long space of their own to spend time and sleep.

"We thought it was importnat that each of the kids had a permanent space that was all theirs," Tessa said, "we gave them a budget and they were able to decide how they wanted to use that money."

However, since the bunks are only six foot long, 15-year-old Sam is too tall so has his bedroom in the luggage compartment of the bus, along with his pet snake.

Sam said: "I have more privacy than anyone else, Ihave a full mattress and definitely more room than all my siblings."

Tessa and Matt's bedroom, which doubles as Matt's office during the day,has a full sized mattress and is the perfect place to relax in the evenings.

When the family first converted to life on the road their youngest kids was just three-years-old, so they wanted to make sure they still had something that resembled a bathtub.

Tessa spotted a wooden planter that would work perfectly as a small bathtub and shower, so added in the necessary drainage to make it work.

They even made their own composting toilet, which they use pine shavings for, "it hasn't been a problem at all," Tessa said.
