We’re cleaning pros & this is when you need to replace common household items – your sofa definitely needs the chuck | The Sun

DO you ever look around your home and wonder when you should change each item, from your sofa to your shower curtain?

According to some home and cleaning pros, each common household item has a particular shelf life that you need to adhere to.

And luckily the experts are on hand to let you know the answers – and there’s a drastically different time frame for each one.

Social media account Very Well Today ran through pieces of furniture, including doormats and curtains, before lifting the lid on how long you should keep them for.

In a post titled ‘how often to replace these household items’, they also shared details on bath mats and, one of the most important ones – mattresses.

First up, though, was a simple kitchen sponge, which they said is the household item that needs changing most frequently.

Very Well Today, who can be found on TikTok at @verywelltoday, explained the kitchen accessory should be swapped “when it’s stinky”, encouraging their followers to take a sniff test.

Second on the agenda is the shower curtain liner, which should be changed every three months.

While a toilet brush lasts slightly longer at 6-12 months.

Elsewhere in the bathroom, the bath mat is more hard-wearing and has a life span of 18-24 months.

However, bath towels come in the middle of that and should be changed every two years.

Moving onto the bedroom, pillows should be looked at every one to two years, while bed sheets can last up to two years.

There’s then a big jump in the time frame, as nonstick cookware can last for up to five years before it becomes redundant.

Throw pillows come in at five to ten years, which could work well with re-decorating.

Meanwhile, a mattress has six to eight years until it needs swapping.

And one of the more surprising figures comes when talking about the sofa, as it needs to be changed once every seven to fifteen years – meaning many people’s couches are probably out of date.

Other times to bear in mind include ten years for a smoke detector, ten to twelve years for small kitchen appliances, and ten to fifteen years for any duvet inserts.

But two other household items used for decoration have their own unique set of rules.

When it comes to doormats, it’s important to keep a close eye on them and purchase a new one “when the bristles wear down.”
