49 years ago (1974) Ethiopia’s Emperor Haile Selassie was deposed in a military coup.
He reigned for 58 years, apart from five years spent in exile in England from 1936-1941 when the country was occupied by Italian fascist forces.
He was assassinated a year later.
31 years ago (1992) Nasa launched Space Shuttle Endeavour, marking the Shuttle’s 50th mission.
On board were Mae Carol Jemison, the first African-American woman in space, Mamoru Mohri, the first Japanese citizen to fly in a US spaceship and Mark Lee and Jan Davis, the first married couple in space.
