Aldi is opening 20 new stores before the end of the year in major expansion plan | The Sun

ALDI is set to open 20 new stores before the end of the year as part of its target to reach 1,500 branches across the UK.

The discounter has just opened its 1,000 UK store and has been crowned by Which? as the UK's cheapest supermarket.

Aldi is Britain's fourth biggest grocer and today has just opened its 1,000 store in Woking, Surrey.

It would not confirm at this stage locations or timings of the 20 new stores but we will update when we know more.

The discount supermarket is the fastest-growing supermarket in the UK with many people switching in an attempt to cut down on their weekly shop.

The retailer was named by Which? for the fifteenth month in a row as the UK's cheapest supermarket, beating its closest rival Lidl by £1.32 on a basket of groceries.

Aldi UK and Ireland chief executive officer, Giles Hurley said: "Opening our 1,000th store is a huge milestone and wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our 40,000 incredible colleagues.

“Our popularity is growing, and there is huge demand for people to have an Aldi store near to them to increase shoppers’ access to our unbeatable prices.

“The next phase of our expansion will involve another 500 new stores over the coming years.

"It is a long-term target and is not a ceiling to our ambition to have an Aldi store close to everyone in the UK."

The Woking store is one of over 150 sites that Aldi now has in the South East region.

The supermarket is one of the highest paying in the sector offering its employees £11.40 an hour, the same as its rival Lidl.

Other stores opening up new locations

Another discount retailer is also looking to expand its offering.

Poundland is set to open five new shops in September.

The chain had already opened up dozens of new stores in the first half of the year, as well as making some closures.

Poundland stores will be opening in Pontefract, Cardiff, Ryde, Dartmouth and Teignmouth this month.

At the opposite end of the retail scale, luxury homeware brand The White Company is set to open in five new locations by the end of November.

The retailer confirmed to The Sun it is open in the following new locations:

  • Ringwood, Hampshire – August 24
  • St Andrews – end of September
  • Hitchin, Hertfordshire – mid-October
  • Belfast – end of November
  • Farnham – date not yet confirmed

However, it is not good news for everyone, as bargain retailer Wilko recently fell into administration after failing to find a buyer earlier in the year.

B&M has now stepped in to take over 51 Wilko locations in a £13million deal, but the future of hundreds of remaining Wilko stores and thousands of jobs still remain uncertain.
