- See all the tyrannical stage parents who took their children’s careers too far
Being propelled into the spotlight at a young age can certainly be overwhelming for a kid – especially when they don’t really want to be a star at all and they’re being pushed into acting by an overbearing parent.
Whether it was because they needed the money, longed for the attention, or wanted their kids to live out their own failed dreams, many of Hollywood’s biggest child stars have admitted that their ‘gold-digging’ parents ‘exploited’ them when they were little.
Most recently, Brooke Shields railed against her mother for allowing her to pose nude at age 10 and star as a child prostitute when she was only 11 – and she’s not the only one to suffer from a domineering stage parent.
Modern Family star Ariel Winter once revealed that her ‘abusive’ mother ‘sexualized’ her when she was little, ‘restricted’ her food so she would stay thin, and put immense pressure on her to succeed as an actress.

In addition, Nickelodeon alum Jennette McCurdy has been open about her tumultuous relationship with her mom -who was ‘obsessed’ with her appearance and started bleaching her hair, having her teeth whitened, and teaching her to count calories so she could become a star, which resulted in her suffering from an eating disorder throughout her childhood.
Wizard Of Oz actress Judy Garland was one of the most famous faces on the globe by the time she was 16, but she later said that her mom would threaten her if she didn’t feel like performing, and that she gave her diet and sleeping pills at age 10.
As Brooke slams her mother for failing to protect her when she was a child, FEMAIL has taken a look at all the other stars who have claimed that their parents went to extreme measures to make sure that they succeeded.

While filming the flick, Brooke was forced to kiss her costar, Keith Carradine, then 27, and she recently spoke out against her mother – who was a model and actress herself and served as Brooke’s manager for many years – for allowing her to participate in the controversial film and not stepping in, despite her making it clear that she was uncomfortable.
Brooke opened up about participating in the movie during the upcoming Hulu documentary about her life, entitled Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, which premieres on April 3 – as her own daughters, Rowan, 19, and Grier, 16, revealed that they had refused to watch it.

Her own daughters, Rowan, 19, and Grier, 16, revealed that they had refused to watch the film, stating: ‘It’s child pornography’
‘It’s child pornography,’ Rowan said to Brooke in a preview for the doc before she asked her: ‘Would you have let us [do that] at the age of 11?’ Brooke responded: ‘No.’
While chatting with The Sunday Times about it, the star said it was ‘hard for her’ to have the conversation with her daughters, and that she had to remind herself ‘not to justify her mother to them.’
‘I mean, I could say, “Oh, it was the time back then,” or, “Oh, it was art,” but I don’t know why she thought it was all right. I don’t know,’ she added.
‘I had to contend with so much at such an early age, and there was resilience, but also I put on blinders as a defense mechanism. But now I can look at that little girl and think, “She did it, she pulled through.”‘
She added that she is not ‘angry’ with her mother, but instead, she feels ‘sad’ for her. Teri passed away in 2012 aged 79 from an illness related to dementia.
In her 2014 memoir, There Was A Little Girl: The Real Story Of My Mother And Me, Brooke spoke further about her relationship with Teri, who became an alcoholic when the star was just an infant after her father, Frank, left them.
In the book, Brooke explained that because her mom was the only person she had, their bond became ‘so intense.’

‘I thought she was God, I thought she could change the weather. It was us against the world,’ she wrote.
In the book, Brooke explained that because her mom was the only person she had, their bong became ‘so intense.’ She wrote: ‘I was justifying everything. I thought she was God’
‘It’s so innate when you’re an only child of a single mother,’ she added to The Times. ‘All you want to do is love your parent and keep them alive forever, and so I wanted to protect her.
‘And by virtue of protecting her, I was justifying everything, and that solidified that bond between us.’
However, she told Porter Edit in 2018 that when her mother got drunk, she would lash out at Brooke and even body shame her.
‘My mother would get drunk and say: “Why don’t you move your fat a**?” So, I’ve always believed I had a fat a**,’ she recalled.
Brooke also told The Guardian in 2021 that looking back, it’s clear now that her mother had her get into modeling because she needed to ‘pay the bills’ – but added that she didn’t feel the ‘responsibility’ of it back then.
‘She had this baby that looked this way, and that’s how we survived. My looking a certain way paid the bills,’ she explained.
‘I just loved the approval, I loved working and I loved being on a set. We had fun, we traveled everywhere.
‘So it wasn’t as if I felt the responsibility as much as: “Oh my God, we get to get a car. Or, we bought a house. We bought another house.” It felt like, if I do this, we get this. That’s the way it went for decades.’
Ariel Winter revealed her ‘physically and emotionally abusive’ mother ‘sexualized’ her from a young age, restricted her food, and forced her to get into acting after her own career failed
Ariel Winter (front left), 25, shot to fame after she starred in the ABC sitcom Modern Family when she was 11 years old
The star later revealed that acting wasn’t her choice, but instead, her mother, Crystal Workman, forced her to enter the industry since she herself dreamed of being a star
Ariel, 25, shot to fame after she starred in the ABC sitcom Modern Family when she was 11 years old.
She first started acting when she was only four – participating in a slew of commercials before landing small roles in shows like Listen Up!, Freddie, Monk, Bones, ER, and Phineas and Ferb, followed by her breakthrough part in Modern Family.
The star later revealed that acting wasn’t her choice, but instead, her mother, Crystal Workman, forced her to enter the industry since she herself dreamed of being a star.
Ariel told The Hollywood Reporter in 2017 that her mom was ‘physically and mentally abusive,’ and that she would ‘restrict’ food, ‘sexualize’ her from a young age, and put immense pressure on her to succeed.
‘You don’t get to mess up when you have somebody around you who is constantly watching,’ she said.
‘She dressed me in the smallest miniskirts, sailor suits, low-cut things, the shortest dresses you’ve ever seen.
Ariel (seen with her family in 2005) said in 2017 that her mother was physically and mentally abusive, and that she would ‘restrict’ food and ‘sexualize’ her from a young age
Ariel also told LaPalme magazine in 2017 that her mom (seen in 2019) would ‘isolate’ her from others, including her own father, Glenn
The young star (seen in 2015) was removed from her home in 2012 following allegations of abuse, and she went to live with her older sister, Shanelle Gray. She was emancipated at age 17
‘People thought I was 24 when I was 12. If there was going to be a nude scene when I was that age, my mother would have a thousand per cent said yes.’
Ariel also told LaPalme magazine in 2017 that her mom would ‘isolate’ her from others, including her own father, Glenn Workman.
‘There wasn’t a lot of connection with a lot of people [during my childhood] because I wasn’t allowed to have them,’ she explained.
‘I spent the first 14 years of my life in isolation and it wasn’t great. [My family] all kind of separated a little, and everyone was trying to deal with it in their own way.’
It’s been reported that Ariel’s mom was so controlling on set that the Modern Family producers even banned her from coming.
The young star was ultimately removed from her home in 2012 following allegations of abuse, and she went to live with her older sister, Shanelle Gray.
She then filed for emancipation, and after a long court battle, she was was granted the emancipation at age 17.
‘It’s most definitely hard to grow up in the industry, but [to] grow up in any instance without a mother from a very young age… it has been very sad for me,’ she told ABC in 2015, before adding that she’s doing ‘much better’ following the separation from her parents.
‘But at the same time, it’s been much better for me emotionally and physically to be on my own and have a better, safer household and support system.
‘Nobody controls [me] anymore. [I] handle [my] own business affairs, [my] own living arrangements, [my] own money. Everything is sort of in [my] own hands.’
Dylan and Cole Sprouse said their ‘financially irresponsible’ mom made them get into acting to ‘satisfy her narcissism’ – and claimed she wasted all the money they made as kid stars
During a recent chat on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast, Cole Sprouse revealed that his ‘financially irresponsible’ mom, Melanie Wright, ‘forced’ him and twin Dylan into acting
And by the time they went to live with their dad at age 10, he said Melanie had blown all of their earnings. The twins are seen with their parents in 1994
Twins Dylan and Cole Sprouse, 30, started acting when they were only eight months old – appearing in a series of diaper commercials – before they were cast in the ABC series Grace Under Fire, followed by the movie Big Daddy (alongside Adam Sandler), That ’70s Show, Friends, and arguably their biggest role, Disney Channel’s Suite Life Of Zack and Cody.
During a recent chat on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast, however, Cole revealed that their ‘financially irresponsible’ mom, Melanie Wright, ‘forced’ him and Dylan into child acting to make ends meet – before she ultimately lost custody of the two boys when they were 10 years old.
And by the time they went to live with their dad, Matthew Sprouse, he said Melanie had blown all of their earnings, leaving them with practically nothing.
‘When my father was given forced custody, we had pretty much lost everything from the youngest parts of our career,’ he shared.
‘My mother was an incredibly wonderful and artistic woman, but she was financially the most irresponsible woman ever.
‘I am remorseful in very many ways that she wasn’t able to get out of it, but I don’t blame her at all.’
When asked if he has a relationship with Melanie now, he added: ‘Not at all. I miss her a lot.’
‘In truth, she lost her mind. I think it was the consequence of some weird alchemy of addiction and mental instability and it’s probably the greatest wound in my life, and also the greatest driving force for my continuing in this industry,’ he said.
Cole credited the show Suite Life with ‘saving their lives,’ explaining, ‘It provided us with an amount of stability and consistency, and routine, that really was needed for my brother and I’
Cole said he believed his mom ‘found a tremendous sense of self-identity through motherhood’ and ‘tried to turn it into a profitable business.’ They’re seen with her in 2000
Cole credited Suite Life with ‘saving their lives,’ telling the Alex, ‘It provided us with an amount of stability and consistency, and routine, that really was needed for my brother and I at the time.’
In a second appearance on the Diary of a CEO podcast days later, Cole spoke about it further, and he said he believed his mom ‘found a tremendous sense of self-identity through motherhood’ and ‘tried to turn it into a profitable business.’
He said she couldn’t resist her ‘selfishness and greed’ and that looking back, he sees someone who ‘grapples with mental illness, drug abuse, but primarily narcissism.’ The family is seen in 2000
‘For identical twin boys going into acting is an economic loophole – there are labor laws that can be incredibly profitable, so that’s what she did,’ he explained.
‘It made a lot of financial sense for her to push us into acting.’
He also said he thought ‘it satisfied some sort of narcissism’ his mother, an aspiring painter, had since she longed ‘to be recognized as an artistic success.’
‘She was a wonderful painter, so she always wanted some sort of artistic recognition and validation,’ he explained.
‘But as time went on I think the entertainment industry just kind of broke her. This industry encourages the worst qualities of you as a person… selfishness, greed.
‘I think as I have aged I’ve looked back on a lot of circumstances of that entire environment and I see a person that grapples with mental illness, drug abuse, but primarily narcissism.
‘A wicked narcissism. The inability to perceive anything out of your own perspective, and that just doesn’t work with being a mother, with being a family in general.’
Jennette McCurdy claimed her mother obsessed over her appearance, and started bleaching her hair and restricting her calories – resulting in her developing anorexia as a child

She was cast in a few commercials before landing the pivotal role as Carly Shay’s hilarious and spunky best friend, Sam Puckett, in the Nickelodeon show iCarly in 2007.
However, the singer revealed in her 2022 memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died, that her mother, who also served as her manager, controlled almost every aspect of her life – including her career, TV appearances, and roles, as well as what she ate and when she bathed.

Macaulay Culkin said his dad would force him to do movie after movie as a kid, despite him begging for a break – and his father even took away his bed in an attempt to ‘break his spirit’
Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin, 42, revealed that he never wanted to be a star, and that it was his ‘abusive’ father, Kit, who made him get into acting. He is seen with his family
Macaulay told New York Magazine in 2001 that he begged his dad to let him take a break from acting, but he wouldn’t let him. He is seen in Home Alone in 1990
Macaulay, 42, is often regarded as one of the most successful child stars of all time – starring in movies like the Home Alone series, My Girl, The Good Son, The Nutcracker, and Richie Rich, among others, all before he was 15.
The child star suspected that his father was resentful towards him because he had wanted to become a child star and had never made it. Kit is seen in August 2022
However, he later revealed that he never wanted to be a star, and that it was his ‘abusive’ father, Kit Culkin, who made him get into acting.
According to ABC News, his mother, Patricia Brentrup, would stay home with his siblings while Kit traveled with him from one set to the next, while also managing his career.
He told the outlet that his dad was ‘very hard on him’ and would ‘deny him certain things’ – including a bed, which meant he had to sleep on the couch.
‘I think it was just a way of him wanting to break my spirit,’ he said. ‘He wanted me to know to know that he was in charge and if he didn’t want us to sleep on a bed, we weren’t gonna sleep on a bed.’
He also recalled how Kit forced him to stay up all night sometimes to study lines, despite the young actor feeling exhausted.

Macaulay (seen in 1994) stopped acting in 1994 after his mother gained custody of him, and he and Kit have been estranged ever since
‘I said to Kit, “Listen, I’m really getting tired and I’m not at school as much as I’d like to be. I really need some time off.”
‘He said, “Yeah, sure,” and the next thing I knew I was on the next set doing the next thing, and it just kind of clicked in my brain, like, “OK, there’s basically nothing I can do to make this stop.”‘
The Home Alone alum suspected that his father was resentful towards him because he had wanted to become a child star and had never made it.
‘Everything that he tried to do in his life, like, I excelled at before I was 10 years old,’ he added.
Macaulay eventually stopped acting in 1994 after his mother gained custody of him, and he and Kit have been estranged ever since.
After the star cut ties with his dad, it was revealed that his dad had been taking 15 per cent of his earnings for himself.
Macaulay ultimately had to battle his own parents in court to gain control of his massive trust, which was said to be worth millions of dollars.
In 2016, while speaking to DailyMail.com, Kit said he ‘doesn’t consider Macaulay a son anymore.’

But last year, the longtime actor told Access Hollywood that his mother, Debbie Wheaton, ‘forced’ him to act, despite him telling her ‘over and over’ that he ‘didn’t want to do it.’
He said that his mom, who is an actress herself, would bring him along to her own auditions and ask the casting directors if he could read with her before he finally landed his own role.
He also claimed that she would train him to tell people, ‘I want to do what mommy does.’
‘Acting was actually something that was forced on me. I have these very clear memories of saying over and over, “I don’t want to do this. I just want to be a kid. Let me be a kid,”‘ he said
Things got so bad that the star (seen with his parents and siblings in 1987) admitted he contemplated ending his own life
‘Acting was actually something that was forced on me. I have these very clear memories of saying over and over, “I don’t want to do this. I just want to be a kid. Let me be a kid,”‘ he admitted.
‘I just learned as a child, if I’m gonna get attention and approval from my parents, that I think every child absolutely deserves unconditionally, I have to do what mom wants.’
When watching back scenes from Stand By Me, Wil said he couldn’t help but notice ‘how sad he looks,’ adding, ‘It hurts my heart to see that little boy and see how much he’s hurting.’
Things got so bad that the star admitted he contemplated ending his own life at one point.
‘Through a combination of an incredible emotional abuse from my father and a lot of manipulation, using me, from my mother, it really put me in that place,’ he said.
Judy Garland said her mother would threaten her if she didn’t feel well enough to perform, and forced her to take diet and sleeping pills when she was only 10
Judy Garland started performing when she was only two years old – after her mother, Ethel Marion (seen together in 1938), forced her and her two sisters to form a band together
Judy once revealed that her mother would threaten her if she didn’t want to perform, recalling, ‘She’d say, “You get out and sing or I’ll wrap you around the bedpost and break you off short”‘
Judy started performing when she was only two years old after mother Ethel Marion forced her and her two sisters to form a band together called The Gumm Sisters.
The family soon relocated from Grand Rapids, Minnesota, to Lancaster, California, so that Ethel could turn them into ‘stars’ – and, according to Judy, everything changed after they made the move.
Judy went on to star in The Wizard of Oz at age 16, which propelled her into the spotlight and launched a major career for the young star. She passed away in 1969 at age 47 from an accidental overdose
‘From the day we arrived in Lancaster all the wonderful carefree fun and joy in my family began to vanish,’ the actress once said.
‘Suddenly Mother decided we had to be stars. She started to drag us to any place someone important might see us.’
She also told Barbara Walters that her mother would threaten her if she didn’t want to perform.
‘She would sort of stand in the wings when I was a little girl and if I didn’t feel good, if I was sick to my tummy, she’d say, “You get out and sing or I’ll wrap you around the bedpost and break you off short.” So I’d go out and sing,’ Judy shared.
According to the book Get Happy: The Life Of Judy Garland, her mom, whom she referred to as ‘the real Wicked Witch of the West,’ even gave Judy diet pills and sleeping pills when she was only 10 years old.
Judy went on to star in The Wizard Of Oz at age 16, which propelled her into the spotlight and launched a major career for the young star.
She continued to act after that, however, she struggled to come to terms with her sudden stardom and battled drug and alcohol addiction for years – before she passed away in 1969 at age 47 from an accidental overdose.

Her mom eventually sent her to a psychiatric institution when she was 13, where she spent 18 months, and at age 14, after leaving the center, she became emancipated from her parents
‘When I was 13, that was probably the lowest,’ she said. ‘Just knowing that I really was alone, it felt terrible.
‘It was a really rebellious time. I was very, very angry. If you search deep down in me, it’s like, why am I so angry, man? And it’s like, OK, ’cause my parents weren’t there.
‘But I realized, honestly, yeah, my mom locked me up in an institution – boohoo! It did give an amazing discipline.
‘It was like serious recruitment training and boot camp, and it was horrible and dark and very long-lived, a year and a half, but I needed it.
‘I needed that whole insane discipline. My life was not normal. I was not a kid in school with normal circumstances. There was something very abnormal, and I needed some severe shift.
‘It was a very important thing to experience for me. It was very humbling, very quieting.
‘Maybe it was necessary, because I came out of there a more respecting person. And my parents didn’t teach me that, and life wasn’t teaching me that.’
When asked if she felt ‘exploited’ by her parents, she responded, ‘I mean, well, yeah, I think with my mother.’

She was determined to make her daughters stars, and quickly pushed them into showbusiness.
‘The way she controlled Kim was just unbelievable,’ one of Kim’s exes, John Jackson, told the author.
‘Kim used to tell me stories of when she was 12 and 13 and 14 years old and how she’d drive the family car and go pick up her mom at different bars.
‘Her mom would have men over all the time on different nights of the week and she’d make Kim perform for them – do her little skits and dance. Her mom would have her basically perform on cue.’
Kathleen died of breast cancer in March 2002, which had spread to her lungs and then to her brain.

‘I wish I had kept the nose of my ancestors,’ she told the publication. ‘I think I would have grown into it.’
‘No 14-year-old just wants plastic surgery just because, unless they’ve had a certain feature pointed out so many times to the point that they are insecure,’ one person tweeted after the article came out.
‘How much do you want to bet Yolanda was the main one making Bella feel that way about her nose? Then ALLOWING SURGERY?’
Another added: ‘At 14, you are just too young to have a nose job… Yolanda should have never had kids.’

‘Bella Hadid got a nose job at 14? There is a special place in Hell for Yolanda,’ someone else said.
A fourth tweet read, ‘BELLA WAS 14 when she got her first nose job. Yolanda is a menace.’
A different disgruntled fan agreed: ‘The fact Yolanda let Bella at 14 get a nose job… that’s not a good mother.’
‘Yolanda did a number on both daughters, especially Bella. Having a nose job at 14 is so problematic,’ someone else tweeted. ‘That woman is going to Hell for what did to her daughters.’
‘Her face isn’t even grown yet and [you’re] letting her go under the knife?’ another user asked.
There aren’t specific laws surrounding cosmetic surgery in the US, but rhinoplasty can be performed when the nose has completed 90 percent of its growth, which can occur as early as age 13 in girls.
That wasn’t the only time that Yolonda, who was a famous model before she became a mom and previously starred on the Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills, has faced the furor for being brutally honest with her daughters about what it takes to succeed in the cutthroat industry.

Back in 2019, Bravo released old footage of Bella and Gigi on The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills (seen), and Yolanda was ridiculed for schilling out dieting advice to her daughters
In one scene, Yolanda told her then 17 daughter Gigi that she has to diet since ‘in Paris and Milan, they like the girls just a tad on the skinny side’
Back in 2019, after Bravo released some old footage of Bella and sister Gigi Hadid, 27, from when they appeared on The Real Housewives with their mom years earlier, Yolanda was ridiculed for schilling out dieting advice to her young daughters, and discouraging Gigi from playing volleyball because it will make her ‘bulky.’
‘Volleyball is a very masculine sport. Modeling a very feminine thing,’ Yolanda told the then 17-year-old while preparing dinner for her family in a season three episode, which aired in 2012.
In the past, Yolanda came under fire for discouraging Gigi from playing volleyball because she said it will make her ‘bulky’
She also told the camera, ‘She’s gotta start building her career and that means sometimes we have to give up the things that we love to do.
‘These girls they train four hours a day after school so their bodies are big and bulky. I mean, they eat like men. I wanted her to develop as a woman.’
In another scene from season four of the show, Yolanda and Gigi were on set at one of her photo shoots.
The teen was getting ready to celebrate her birthday, and shared her excitement about breaking her diet.
‘I am so excited for the food,’ she told her mom. ‘Pretty much all of the food that we are eating is a like heart attack in a meal, but it’s going to be so good.’
‘You can have one night of being bad,’ Yolanda responded.
‘Then you gotta get back on your diet because, you know, in Paris and Milan they like the girls just a tad on the skinny side.’
In a third clip, which was filmed in 2013, Gigi told her mom that she was ‘feeling really weak’ because she had only eaten ‘half an almond.’
Yolanda then told her daughter: ‘Have a couple of almonds and chew them really well.’
