Let’s be honest. If you’re a busy mum, it can be frustrating seeing celebrities who manage to always look fresh faced despite juggling career and family life. It’s easy to imagine that achieving youthful and glowing skin is both costly and time consuming.
However, as a beauty expert and a mother, I’m happy to tell you that’s not always the case. Choosing four to six quality skincare products that you apply daily or weekly, and following a few simple lifestyle tips, really can give you outstanding long-term results.
Firstly, look for brands and products that offer effective ingredients to suit your skincare needs. One excellent way to find out what works for you is to try a subscription box like the OK! Beauty Box. I’m impressed by the latest celebrity edit curated by Billie Shepherd – someone who always manages to look great despite juggling her TV career, pregnancy and family life!
It’s clear from her selection that Billie prioritises good anti-ageing ingredients such as vitamin C, hibiscus extract and red algae, to name just a few. There are products from trusted brands such as REN, Elizabeth Arden, Gatineau and Nip+Fab in her OK! Beauty Box, and at £45 here for over £200-worth of products, this is an affordable way to dive into some great actives.
As well as applying effective ingredients, I also recommend trying these simple diet and lifestyle tips to help you to boost skin vitality and prolong youthful, glowing skin. Follow me on Instagram or check out my podcast – The Beauty Room, brought to you by OK! Beauty Box – to get more quick tips.
Get quality sleep
Quality and quantity of sleep is important to the body’s ability to repair cellular damage and so reduce the appearance of fine lines and dull skin. This is a tough one for mums juggling young babies or children! And in reality, it’s not always possible. Don’t beat yourself up about this. You’re doing an amazing job of raising your little ones and sleep will return for you! I found this one the toughest when my daughter was younger. You can do a lot to balance this by following my other steps.
Drink plenty of water
Your skin needs hydration to remain supple. Aim to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water a day and more if you are exercising or there are extreme weather conditions. Shivering and sweating both deplete your body’s water level.
Eat fruit and veg high in antioxidants
These include blueberries, cranberries, broccoli, spinach, carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, cabbage, avocados, beetroot, pumpkin, kale, dark chocolate, bran, pecans, elderberries, kidney beans, prunes – and many more! Antioxidants are essential to protecting your skin from free radicals and environmental damage, such as UVA and UVB rays. They help the body to prevent damage to skin cells that can lead to disease.
Use an SPF on your face every day
Even when it is cloudy, UVA and UVB rays can penetrate and so using a high factor SPF every day will help to ensure your delicate skin is protected. Sun damage is one of the largest factors for premature ageing, causing skin pigmentation issues that can be difficult to reverse. I like to use a non-nano zinc-based factor 50 SPF.
Don’t forget your hands and décolletage
We all tend to focus on our face as this is what we notice first when we look in the mirror. However, your décolletage and hands are a massive age giveaway! When applying your skincare products, remember to apply a small amount to this area and use the excess to massage into your hands. This is a neat trick for spreading the value of the ingredients without using heaps more product.
Smile and don’t sweat the small stuff
I often hear myself offering this advice. On the surface, it doesn’t sound like a key beauty tip but the old saying “beauty is more than skin deep” is so true. A beautiful glow comes from within. Yes, we are all tired and juggling busy lives but when you stop for a second and look at the little world you have built around you, it is beautiful. If you’re smiling now reading this, then you get it. Look in the mirror right now and you will see your natural and beautiful glow. And it’s for free!
