Energy expert and CEO at Utility Bidder Chris Shaw explained any areas exposed to drafts can bring in cold air and let warm air out, so homeowners should make sure they insulate their front door to keep energy costs as low as possible.
Chris urged homeowners to check common front door features such as pet flaps and letter boxes as most of the heat is lost through these.
The expert warned: “Don’t forget about pet flaps and letter boxes. If you can, fixing your letter box so that any drafts can’t enter the home will have a big impact.”
A simple way to fix this and stop cold air from getting into the house is installing a letterbox draught excluder.
Letterbox draught-excluder can be easily fitted and quickly attached to the internal side of any external door.
The tool uses a brush-like plate to keep the warmth inside and the cold draughts out, and it can help reduce waste and lower energy bills.
Letterbox draught-excluders are a great home addition this winter and they can be purchased on Amazon for under £5.
Sharing their thoughts in the review section, buyer @gordon007 said: “Ideal for stopping the letterbox flapping in the wind and stopping draughts coming in” and @janice commented: “Product is easy to install and worth the money.”
Experts at Applianceanalysts shared other simple ways homeowners can insulate their front door.
Placing a door snake
Using a door snake “will do the job,” the experts explained, and “if you’re low on time, a door snake hardly takes any time at all”.
Simply purchase a door snake or draft stopper and place it at the bottom of the doors to stop the draft from coming in.
Installing a door sweep
The experts at Applianceanalysts explained the door snake method “is a temporary solution” but “to truly lower heat bills, you need something more permanent”.
“If your doors don’t have door sweeps, they are an easy and inexpensive way to keep out the cold.
“A door sweep is a metal strip that attaches to the bottom of a door to seal the gap.”
Although installing a door sweep is relatively easy, people will need a tape measure and a drill as well as the door sweep, which can be bought on Amazon for under £10.
Weatherstripping
Weatherstripping takes the door sweep “one step further” as instead of sealing the bottom gap, people will be sealing all of the edges of the door.
“Weatherstripping is sold in handy kits, which makes your job a whole lot easier.
“In the end, this project should only take around 10 minutes!” the experts explained.
Weatherstripping can also be found on Amazon for less than £15.
Window film
Window film is the perfect method for exterior doors with glass as heat often escapes out of the glass.
Homeowners can also purchase a window film on Amazon and install it themselves at home. However, they will need a few tools, including:
Window film kit
Window cleaning supplies
Hairdryer
Utility knife
