Celebrity A-level results from famous flops to surprise boffins

Across the country, thousands of students will be nervously opening their A-level results today to find out what grades they have achieved after two years of studying.

And while the experience may play a role in what path students go on next, whether that’s further study or work, it’s important to note that A-level results aren’t the be all and end all.

In fact, many people in the public eye, including the royals and Love Island contestants, have sat their A-levels and achieved a mixture of results, proving that how things go doesn’t necessarily determine the future.

So, let’s take a peek at what some of those in the public eye achieved in their A-levels…

Emma Watson

On screen, Emma Watson may be known for playing the intelligent Hogwarts student Hermione Granger in Harry Potter but it turns out that in real life, the actress isn’t all that different.

Unlike Hermione however, 32 year old Emma didn’t spend her time studying spells and potions but did instead read up on English Literature, Geography and Art.

After receiving straight As in her subject, the Hollywood star studied English Literature at the prestigious Brown University in America.

Jake Humphrey

Former CBBC presenter and football host Jake Humphrey didn’t quite succeed in his A-levels and failed all of his subjects.

After sitting his exams back in 1999, the TV personality opened his results to find that he’d been given an E, U and an N (the grade below an E).

Following his results, Jake worked at McDonald’s though he was sacked six months later for his “poor communication skills”.

Still, it’s clear that Jake hasn’t let his results define him given his achievements on the small screen.

Jon Snow

While Jon Snow may be known for his investigative journalism and stint as the longest-running presenter on Channel 4 news, the 74 year old didn’t find A-Levels the easiest and didn't spend his lunch breaks studying.

After switching colleges, Jon secured a C in English Language though failed his Geography and Biology courses. Jon then studied Law at the University of Liverpool.

Tom Daley

While Tom Daley may have shot to fame during his teens as a member of Team GB, the olympic diver managed to squeeze in his A-levels alongside his rigorous training programme.

Away from the pool, 27 year old Tom gained an A* in Photography and As in both Spanish and Maths.

Despite securing a bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympics one year before, the sportsman revealed that results day was “the most nerve-wracking thing ever, having to open that and see it come through”.

He continued: “I never have to go to school ever again. I am kind of going to miss it but I mean I'm very happy to come away with straight As and yeah, very happy.”

Jodie Marsh

Jodie Marsh has been open about her time at school and in the past has detailed her experiences of being bullied and having rhinoplasty on her nose while a teen because of her negative time.

And while she may not have fond memories of her time at school, the 43 year old shone academically in spite of the bullying.

“I got 11 GCSEs all at A & A* and three A levels but I didn't go to Uni,” she said in 2012. “I'm now a successful business woman and champion bodybuilder.”

Richard Branson

Despite being a top business tycoon with an honorary degree of Doctor of Technology from Loughborough University, Richard Branson turned his back on education from an early age.

The businessman left school at the age of 16 and didn’t look back, having amassed a whopping $5billion net worth for himself.

In a tweet on results day in 2016, Richard, 72, reassured students that “you can reach success in spite of failed exams”.

Simon Cowell

Like Richard, music mogul Simon Cowell is another famous dropout. After picking up three O-levels, The X Factor star left school where he began working various drops including on film sets.

The 62 year old’s dad found him a job in the mail room at EMI Music Publishing and from there Simon became one of the biggest names in the business.

Jeremy Clarkson

Now, it wouldn’t be results day without a motivational tweet from Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson about how he managed to succeed in spite of his A-level results.

And while we wait to see what this year’s offering is, it’s well known that Jeremy achieved a C and two Us in his A-levels and now spends his time in villas in St Tropez, cruising on superyachts and eating meals prepared by a chef.
