Mexico’s Guannaby Films and Colombia’s Dynamo have joined forces to make “The Last Circus.” Among the 10 feature film projects being presented at Iberseries & Platino Industria’s Co-Production and Financing Forum, it promises “magnetic, complex but fun characters in what is primarily a family tale,” said actor-producer Christian Tappan, co-founding partner of Guannaby Films alongside Luis Emilio Guzmán and Tiago Correa.
Written by Guzman and to be directed by “The Thin Yellow Line” helmer Celso Garcia, “The Last Circus” turns on Gerardo, a gypsy con artist, who has just lost his family’s circus business due to its mounting debt. A chance to redeem himself comes when he stumbles across the Heart of the Warrior, a priceless gem that has been stolen from a museum. Unfortunately, the jewel thieves will stop at nothing to recover their prized loot.
Garcia describes the project as a family tale “that explores human relationships, unfulfilled promises, and past wounds that have yet to heal.”
“Framed within the mystical and enigmatic gypsy circus world, the story does not lose sight of the universal values that heighten it: Loyalty, the need to belong, the pursuit of freedom, family bonds, and the importance of tradition,” he added.
In terms of location, the producers intend to film the movie in Mexico, with the state of San Luis Potosí offering the necessary locations and logistical support.
Its main cast comprises Mexican talent, with some international actors in the mix.
According to Tappan, the production is fairly advanced in terms of screenplay, cast, locations, budgeting and crew. “With these advancements, the film is ready to start shooting in the first half of 2024; Ideally, it would be an eight-week shoot,” said Tappan.
“This story will visit familiar and explosive worlds and atmospheres resembling those of Guy Ritchie, Martin Scorsese, Emir Kusturica, and Quentin Tarantino, but it will do so while keeping the sensation of entering a unique story, one that counts with its own style and character,” said Garcia.
“Latin America is ready to receive, witness and own movies like ‘The Last Circus,’ and it is an honor to be on board the direction of this circus,” he added.
Guannaby Films’ slate spans various genres in film, TV, and podcasts, ranging from Westerns to sci-fi.
Founded in 2006 in Colombia, Dynamo is among the most prominent producers in Latin America and Spain, with offices in Mexico, Madrid and New York. As a producer or providing often extensive production services, it has worked on such high-profile projects as smash hit Netflix series “Narcos,” “La Cabeza de Joaquín Murrieta” for Prime Video, Doug Liman’s Tom Cruise-led “Barry Seal,” Alejandro Landes’ “Monos” and thriller “Gemini Man” with Will Smith.
