The ‘new relationship glow’ is catching. You know the vibe: that renewed force that positively radiates like sunshine, like seeing the world through new, rose-tinted glasses.
Now, there’s a new phenomenon on the rise – and it’s called the ‘girlfriend effect.’
With 78.9 million views on TikTok, the #girlfriendeffect is the idea that getting into a relationship has the ability to give you a huge glow-up. It’s typically been applied to opposite-sex relationships, specifically the impact a girl might have on her boyfriend’s appearance.
‘The girlfriend effect is basically when a guy gets a girlfriend and the girlfriend makes him just glow up so hard. Makes him look 100 times better,’ one user explains.
The trend has seen TikTokers in their droves sharing their ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures, with their partner’s pre-relationship snaps often encompassing a baby face, a totally different hairstyle and a strikingly different wardrobe.

However, it doesn’t come without its valid controversies.
‘The critics are saying that girlfriends are changing their boyfriends and forcing them into a style that they don’t like, taking any sense of their own personality out of their outfits’, @gabesco, who has been widely attributed towards starting the trend, explains.
‘I don’t think that’s true. At least in my case, I hope this is the case with other people, I just didn’t really know what to wear. I never really had a specific style to wear.

‘My closet was not coherent at all. Nothing really went together, I didn’t know what to buy. I never really felt comfortable in my clothes.
‘But then my girlfriend came along and started giving me advice. She gave me a Pinterest board full of outfit inspiration.
‘I went from having no style input in my life to suddenly having a list of possible outfits to wear. When I went into a store, I knew what to look for instead of just aimlessly wandering around and finding anything that fits.
‘It’s not about being changed, it’s about being shown a style.’

Meanwhile, one user joked that the girlfriend effect didn’t rub off on her partner.
‘He still wears the same things as when I met him and refuses to get rid of clothes with holes in because they “still work.”’
Same bestie, same.
