A Dublin café has been slammed for charging what critics label as ‘extortionate’ prices for a hot chocolate. 

Bewley’s café, located on Grafton Street in the centre of the Irish capital, has long been a popular spot with tourists. 

Now it has come in for heavy criticism after a customer posted a receipt of the amount they were charged for one hot chocolate in the establishment. 

Posting on X, formerly Twitter, Naomi O’Reilly captioned the price with the comment: ‘A receipt causing shock on the family group chat’. 

They did so after being charged €8.40 (£7.25) for a single hot chocolate, the cost of which was met with disbelief by other users on the platform.

Some were quick to point out that they preferred other, more economical options elsewhere in the city, as they found Bewley’s did not live up to their expectations. 

One user wrote: ‘Always thought Bewley’s was massively overrated tbh, there are much nicer spots in Dublin for a warm drink and a bit of cake’. 

A second joked: ”Gross total’ is definitely an accurate description of that!’

However, a photo from another user replying to the picture of the receipt showed that what they ordered was not just your average hot chocolate. 

Posting in reply, they wrote: ‘Bewley’s hot choc with whipped cream, chocolate shavings and marshmallows. 

‘€8.40 is expensive but it looks like a nice treat if that’s the kind of thing you like. Looks more like a dessert really!’

Another compared to the nearby Temple Bar, which has also been admonished for serving pricey drinks to tourists. 

They remarked: ‘It’s like Temple Bar… people go in just for the experience.

‘There are chocolate cafés on the same street where you can buy a hot chocolate at half that price.’

It comes after tourists hit out at the popular bar for charging ‘barbaric’ amounts for visitors to enjoy a pint after a receipt from the pub was shared online. 

On August 28, Twitter account Pints of Beauty reposted a receipt shared by a reveller after visiting the Dublin tourist hotspot for a round of drinks on August 22.

Posting the receipt on X, they wrote: ‘I’ve had this sent through a few times, think we need to discuss. Tourist attraction or not, this is barbaric!! How can this be justified?’

The receipt with The Temple Bar’s famous logo printed at the top shows a total bill of €81.85 – yet, the punter had only purchased seven items.

Two pints of Guinness – Ireland’s most sought-after beverage from tourists worldwide – amounted to €17.90, or €8.95 for a single pint.

Next on the receipt was one pint of Heineken, setting the customer back a whopping €9.95.

Two vodka and tonic drinks were then purchased – costing €27 for both, meaning the price is set at €13.50 individually.

Finally, two Jameson whisky and ginger mixers also totalled €27, bringing the entire bill to €81.85.
