It’s a classic British meal – yet pie and mash has been mocked online by people around the world after a London-based woman shared a clip of the dish.

Meme account @messedupfoods on Twitter shared footage of the woman eating the traditional meal, and captioned it: ‘British food isn’t real’. In contrast, her original video was titled: ‘Proper English food’.

The woman described Robins Pie and Mash shop, located in the East End of London, as the best in the business after she raved about its taste and affordability.

Filming first from the exterior, she showed viewers the shop front, and said: ‘Come with us to the East End’s finest mash shop’.

Shocked, she exclaimed: ‘£5 for pie, mash and liquor? I’m sorry I can’t remember the last time I ate anywhere that cheap’, the pleased customer explained.

The woman revealed her plate to the camera – showing a generous portion of mashed potatoes served with two minced-beef pies, which she later doused in liquor – a green parsley sauce.

She continued: ‘This was super filling’ and urged viewers to enjoy their meal with malt vinegar.

If you don’t fancy a huge serving, the foodie recommended: ‘You can even get a kids pie if you just wanted mash and gravy, it’s £2. I couldn’t get over the price. It is really nice – I think this is the first time I’ve had pie and mash properly and I loved it’.

However, most people rated her meal as less than impressive – with many poking fun at British cuisine in the comments.

One Twitter user said: ‘British people eat like it’s still WW2 and they’ve got to ration the bunker food’.

But others were more focused on the liquor in particular: ‘The moment she slopped on that green soupy gravy is when I checked out’.

One remarked: ‘I was giving the British the benefit of the doubt that maybe it’s some good slop. But now that you said this I changed my mind’.

Another said: ‘Literally the entire world even outside the US clowns on British food’. While one user was swayed: ‘I’d eat that for sure. Looks pretty good to me to be honest. Just needs some more protein’.
