Emmerdale’s Liam star Jonny McPherson’s life off TV with new partner after co-star split

Jonny McPherson first appeared on Emmerdale as Dr Liam Cavanagh back in 2014, and the actor has gone to become a permanent fixture on the ITV soap.

Jonny, 41, became a regular on Emmerdale in 2018 and took on the role of the soap's resident medic, with Dr Liam going on to find himself involved in all kinds of hard-hitting storylines.

Most recently, Dr Liam began a passionate affair with Wendy Posner (Susan Cookson), unbeknown to her partner Bob Hope.

While we've gotten to know his character well over the years, what do we know about Jonny away from the cameras? Let's take a look…

Jonny, who was raised in Norfolk, studied at Rugby School before moving to London to attend the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art.

Alongside his current soap role, he is also a core ensemble member of multi-award winning, London-based theatre company The Faction. The actor has also ventured into theatre, having played Hamlet in a sell-out London production in 2014.

Away from acting, Jonny, who is a qualified wine taster, can be found going on walks with his beloved dog, Molly, cooking and watching films, or spending time with his girlfriend.

The 41 year old has been in a relationship for two years and has kept his partner's identity a secret in a bid to protect her privacy.

Opening up about his romance to OK!, Jonny revealed: “I am with someone. She is absolutely wonderful. We’ve been together for a couple of years. I am really happy.”

Prior to finding love with his current partner, Jonny dated fellow Emmerdale star Natalie J Robb, who plays Moira Dingle in the soap. The couple split in 2021 after first getting together in lockdown, but have remained good friends despite their break up.

It's not only his relationship status that's changed over recent years, as Jonny has also purchased himself a flat in Leeds after living on a canal boat for several years.

Speaking about his decision, the soap star said: “Acting is a precarious profession. It can be very difficult to get a mortgage if you are only working for six months of the year. So, when you get two years of working on something like Emmerdale, it allows you to get a mortgage finally. I’ve got a flat now in Leeds and I’ve sold my boat."
