Choosing a name for your baby is an exciting and deeply personal decision. It’s a way to give your child a unique identity and something they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
But, what happens when the name you and your partner love is met with disapproval from everyone around you?
This is the predicament that one Reddit user found themselves in, and they’re feeling heartbroken and unsure of how to navigate this situation.
The Reddit user shared their story on the platform. They explained that they and their husband had finally agreed on a name they both liked: Sebastian.
However, there was a twist to the story – before they got together, the husband had adopted a dog and named him Bastian. Now, everyone seems to hate the name Sebastian, including their friends and family.

They had other name options they liked, such as Nicholas and Christopher, but their husband fell in love with the name Sebastian and couldn’t let go of it.
The Reddit user wrote: “My husband and I somehow landed on a name we both like. I mentioned Sebastian and he loved it.
“I had other options I really liked too, Nicholas, Christopher, etc, but he heard Sebastian and kind of stuck to it.
“The problem is, everyone else seems to hate it. Background: before we were together, he adopted a dog and named him Bastian, who lives with his parents.
“Everyone seems to hate the name, including his and my best friends. I’m heartbroken and don’t know how to feel. People either just don’t like it or don’t like that the dog has basically the same name.”
Reddit users debated the choice. One was in support of the name: “Sebastian is a fine name, personally, I wouldn’t care and go ahead. Name will grow on them as they see the child. Even if they still dislike it, I think it’s none of their business to grumble because it’s not an inconceivably odd name.
“But this is one of the reasons I also don’t name my pets human names. But Bastian is a nickname at best.”
Another wrote: “NGL almost sharing a name with the dog is kinda weird but it’s your kid and your choice. Not those other people’s. They’ll get over it.”
One joked: “I find it weird that my name is Maggie and my parents named a dog Maddie.”
