What would you say if we told you that it’s possible to look like a ring light is always shining on your face, simply by booking a clever colour appointment at the hairdresser’s? Well, that’s exactly what John Frieda Salons’ new service “Glow Lights” aims to achieve.
Coined by legendary colourists Nicola Clarke and Zoë Irwin, the service is completely tailored to the individual’s hair, but the main aim is to lift the area around your face using strategically placed pieces of colour and glazes.
Often working with your natural base, colour is lighter around your face and varied throughout your hair for a multidimensional finish. The result is perfectly blended, luminous, expensive-looking colour with lots of shine – a bit like your skin after a hydrating facial – just like Nicola’s clients Kate Moss and Emilia Clarke.
"The mindset behind Glow Lights was all about illumination," Zoë says of the service. “When you have a ring light, for example on your phone, it gives you this amazing illumination which is instantly very youthful. So this is specifically designed to create that within hair."
If you can’t get to one of John Frieda’s salons, take photos of Glow Lights to your hairdresser and ask a soft “beam” of lighter colour around your face and subtle dimension throughout.
Keen to give her brunette a glowy summer makeover, beauty writer Lucy booked in to give Glow Lights a whirl.
Lucy says:
“Although I was very blonde as a child, as an adult I’m firmly a brunette. And while I like experimenting a little with shades, some variation of chocolate brown has been my signature look for years.
But this year I’ve gradually gone lighter with my colour in the lead-up to summer and my hair now has a kind of auburn tone to it. I had two tiny and subtle face-framing highlights added to my hair about three months ago and loved them, so I was keen to build on the effect with the softer approach of Glow Lights.
To add that all-important luminosity around my face, my colourist Francesco strategically placed lighter pieces around my hairline, focusing on my face-framing sections, as well as some lowlights to the under sections for that all-important multidimensional effect.
The lighter sections were toned with what he described as a “sunset red” hue to keep that overall warm feel and, keeping in line with the richer brunette I prefer to my natural mousy colour, my (rather grown out) roots were also given a subtle hint of red to blend seamlessly with the rest of my hair.
My hair was also due a cut, so hairdresser Jonny kindly freshened up my layers with a chop to get my loose curls to spring back to their voluminous glory. I’m told it’s giving nineties Julia Roberts, which I’ll happily take.
So did it lift my complexion as promised? The proof is often in whether other people notice, and I have had a good few compliments on the way my new colour has brightened up my face – even on morning Zoom calls. All in all a lovely summertime glow up.”
Available at John Frieda Aldford Street and Nicola Clarke at John Frieda, Glow Lights starts at £230 and Glow to Go from £125. To book the service, head to johnfriedasalons.com
