Gyles Brandreth revealed that he used to have a ‘secret crush’ on Queen Consort Camilla when he was 16 years old – and that she later jokingly teased his wife Michéle Brown about it.
The former Tory MP, 74, who was a friend of King Charles III, recalled his teenage crush during an appearance on ITV’s Lorraine this morning.
Gyles also revealed how the Queen Consort only found out about the crush when he gave it away on an episode of BBC Radio 4’s Just a Minute – which requires guests to speak without hesitation or repetition on a subject – around 10 years ago. During his guest appearance, he was asked to discuss a ‘secret crush’.
After talking about his fondness for Camilla, he added the now-Queen Consort bumped into his wife at church the week after the episode – and laughed about the whole thing.

TV presenter and author Gyles told Lorraine Kelly about a time during boarding school where, as a 16-year-old, he saw a ‘rather attractive girl’ in the garden of a house where he was having tea.
He described the young 17-year-old woman as ‘wearing jodhpurs’ and ‘smoking her Woodbines in the shrubbery’.
‘This actually was a girl called Camilla Shand,’ Gyles explained. ‘Now little did I think that she might be listening to the programme. Never occurred to me that – then Duchess of Cornwall – now Her Majesty the Queen Consort would be listening to Just A Minute…’
Gyles then admitted he felt ‘a little bit awkward’ as he revealed that a week after the broadcast, Camilla, 75, was visiting his local church during Queen Elizabeth II’s Jubilee year.
There, Camilla bumped into the radio personality’s wife.
The media personality, 74 – who was a friend of King Charles III – told the delightful anecdote on Lorraine today
‘She said: “Tell Gyles, I don’t deny that I was smoking…but they were not Woodbines”,’ he recalled.
Gyles said he had also learned that the King is – or was once – a fan of the show and even allegedly used to leave his children voicemails in the style of the show’s format.
The morning talk show regular appeared on Lorraine to promote his book, A History of Britain in Just a Minute, in which he provides an entertaining tale of the country’s historic events in one-minute laps.
Last month, Gyles discussed King Charles III being depicted without a crown in his first coin effigy, just like his grandfather King George VI.
The Royal Mint had unveiled the King’s first official coin effigy and the 50p will go into circulation before Christmas. He is shown without a crown, unlike the Queen, who wore a tiara or crown in all but one of her coin effigies.

Speaking on This Morning, Gyles noted the move – in echoes of his grandfather King George VI.
He said: ‘It’s not uncommon. Monarchs don’t always wear crowns on their coin portraits.
‘We can see that in examples from previous Kings and Queens and indeed the late Queen’s father King George VI, who, like Charles, didn’t wear a crown in his.’
Edward VII, Charles’s great uncle – is also seen without a crown in his 1937 coins, prior to his abdication and George V’s reign.
