For bargain-hunters keen to explore Costco’s enormous collection, a Channel 5 documentary has discovered a loophole that might allow more people to join as members.

Costco has 29 warehouses spread across the UK, stocking everything from wide-screen TVs to enormous cakes and food products.

But, as a wholesaler, its plus-sized product range is not generally available to the British public. Unlike supermarkets like Tesco or Sainsbury’s, it isn’t possible to simply wander into the store’s aisles in the hope of picking up a bargain.

This is because access to Costco’s shelves is only possible once a person has signed up to the company’s membership scheme.

But, for those who don’t qualify, Channel 5 documentary Costco: Is It Really Worth It? may have found a loophole.

On the store’s website, Costco lists the professions that qualify as having access to purchasing a membership. These include frontline workers such as medical professionals and emergency services, as well as lawyers and retired citizens.

But there have been rumours that holding membership to insurance policies including the AA and RAC might be sufficient to avoid these strict criteria.

During the Channel 5 programme, broadcast on June 8, the show’s producers tested this theory by phoning up a number of stores. And they were surprised to find that the rumours were confirmed.

“Okay brilliant, so I just come down with any of those; AA, RAC, American Express or National Trust, and you guys can sign me up?That’s fantastic,” the producer said.

This means that at four stores across the UK – Cardiff, Birmingham, Sheffield and Coventry – prospective customers are able to sign up using any of the above memberships, even if they wouldn’t otherwise qualify for access to Costco.

Unfortunately for Brits not located near one of the qualifying stores, the documentary revealed that the other 25 Costco warehouses all denied the rumours about this form of loophole access.
