Aged-care mogul Dr Shane Moran may have made his fortune building on the family’s healthcare empire, but his penchant for restoring Sydney’s grand heritage homes has landed him a decent windfall thanks to the $23.1 million sale of Darling House.
Taking the keys to the Georgian property in The Rocks is the family of Filipino businessman and Western Sydney Wanderers co-owner Jefferson Cheng, whose CBD harbourside real estate includes a family compound, of sorts, in the Opera Residences at Circular Quay.
Darling House dates back to the 1830s, named after an 1823 land grant from NSW Governor Ralph Darling, and was completed in 1842 by local boat builder and publican Joseph Farris in an exclusive enclave once known as “Quality Row” for its grand merchant houses and affluent residents.

Dr Moran, Provectus Care founder and chief executive, purchased the heritage-listed property in a dilapidated state from the NSW government at a 2016 auction, at which the sale price of $7.7 million set a suburb record.
The restoration and conversion of the property into seven luxury suites took three years and a reported $10 million. It was listed for sale a year ago with a $25 million guide that was expected to lure boutique hoteliers.
Settlement records show it was purchased in a company name controlled and owned by Cheng’s wife Aileen and her children Jamie, 27, and Justin, 22, all of whom own neighbouring apartments in Opera Residences at Circular Quay totalling $57 million.

The Morans are well-documented lovers of old houses. Family matriarch Greta Moran and her late husband Doug Moran, undertook a major restoration of the Redleaf mansion in Wahroonga in the mid-1990s, and son Peter Moran oversaw the restoration of Juniper Hall in Paddington in 2016.
Dr Moran’s most notable restoration project is the landmark Gothic Revival mansion Swifts in Darling Point, where film sources say the Disney movie The Artful Dodger starring Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Maia Mitchell, Damon Herriman and Susie Porter is currently being filmed.

Records show the deal was exchanged in November, and settled into Farquhar’s name this month with no mortgage. The sale incurred a stamp duty bill of more than $9 million.
Farquhar and his co-founder and co-chief executive of software giant Atlassian, Mike Cannon-Brookes, have dominated Sydney’s top house sales since 2017, claiming three of the top five sales, including Farquhar’s $71 million Elaine estate in Point Piper and Cannon-Brookes’s Fairwater estate next door for $100 million.
The third-highest sale was for the Point Piper property Edgewater which sold for about $95 million in 2020, but gold mining businessman John Li is yet to settle on the purchase.

The three-bedder last traded in late 2021 for $5.5 million, but is being quietly shopped around by BresicWhitney’s Romany Brooks after the couple spent about $11 million purchasing an apartment in the neighbouring Del Rio building from fashion designer Melanie Greensmith, of the Wheels & Dollbaby label, and her partner, former Divinyls guitarist Mark McEntee.

It was listed late last year by Ray White Double Bay’s Ashley Bierman with a guide of $11 million to $11.5 million.
