DEAR DEIDRE: I WORRY my grandson will leave school with no qualifications because nobody will assess him for special needs.
My daughter has been trying for ages to get him checked out but his form tutor says she does not have any worries about him.
I can see he’s different though. He’s not like my other grandson, or my grand-daughter.
He’s 12 and likes his own company. His reading and writing are slow but he is brilliant at maths. You can ask a complicated equation and he knows the answer.
After school, he complains his siblings are noisy and he goes to his room and closes the curtains.
He avoids eye contact and doesn’t seem to have any friends.

DEIDRE SAYS: His form tutor may not have concerns but his mum should write to the school and ask for him to be assessed by a Special Educational Needs Coordinator.
They will be able to see if your grandson has additional needs.
She can also seek further advice and information from the Special Educational Needs Advice Centre (senac.co.uk, 028 9079 5779).
