Naming your child can be a tricky decision process, with many new mothers and fathers doubling guessing and questioning their choices.
However, one expectant mother has shared concern over the name she has her heart set on for her baby bow.
Earlier this week, the UK-based mother-to-be shared her dilemma on Reddit’s Ask/UK forum.
Although her and her husband had settled on the name Bailey, it recently dawned on them that this will mean their son’s initials will be ‘BJ’ – which some may see as crude.
She explained: ‘I’m stumped with this one. For context, my partner and I grew up outside the UK and at times miss very slight cultural nuances.’
An expectant mother, who lives in the UK, has shared concern over the name she wants to choose for her unborn son as she worries he will be bullied
As well as the issue of the initials, the mother explained how she also thought her son may be mistaken for a girl too.
She explained: ‘I’m a little concerned that Bailey is a girl’s name and at the same time he’s going to have the initials BJ.
‘Am I setting him up to get bullied in school? What do kids in the UK think of unisex names? Are the initials going to invite bullying?’
Admitting that she might be acting ‘overly cautious’, the mother was aware that their baby’s name was not a decision they’ve made lightly.
She continued: ‘This is something we can’t change later. My partner absolutely loves the name. Thanks in advance!’
The post amassed hundreds of responses from members of the forum – with the overwhelming majority advising against it.
Along with the crass initials, people pointed out how others might mistake it for their son’s surname and also make him subject to teasing over the popular brand of Irish cream too.
One user explained: ‘Yeah, not just for school. If someone introduced themselves to me as Bailey my first question would be if that’s their forename or surname […]
‘Also, endless jokes about being an alcoholic drink and b**w jobs etc. Give the kid a chance and give him a decent name.’
The woman, who lives in the UK, took to Reddit ‘s Ask/UK forum to ask for people’s opinion over the name ‘Bailey’ and if they think he would be bullied for having the initials ‘BJ.’
Many people begged the mother not to call her child Bailey, with one person explaining that it wouldn’t just be the children that would tease him
Another added: ‘I’ve been teaching for 20 years. Please don’t do this, it’s not just the kids.’
Speaking from experience, one person who has the initials BJ also advised against is.
They said: ‘I’m a BJ I used to get literally thrown from person to person while they shouted “who wants a gobble?” Fun times…’
Taking a more sympathetic approach, others told the mother to go with her instincts and choose the name that she liked best.
One user posted: ‘I went to high school with a Bailey James, and he went by BJ.
Not everyone was set against the name and many told the mother of other Baileys they had met, with one teacher saying she taught three boys with the name
‘Kids are gonna tease, it won’t matter what you name him.’
Another said: ‘I know a Bailey, he has excellent taste in music and a cool beard. You should go for it, it’s a special name. If he won’t get bullied for his name he might get bullied for something else.
‘You can’t predict the future. If anything, society should become more accepting. It’s how he’ll wear the name, how confident he’ll be, not what name it is. Go for it. I wish I had a cool unisex name like that.’
And a third explained: ‘Not solely a girls name. I worked in a secondary for a while and met like three boys called Bailey.’
There were a few others who tried to see the funny side of the name.
There were a few others who tried to see the funny side of the name and made jokes surrounding the alcoholic drink Baileys
One person attempted a joke and said: ‘As well as the unfortunate initials I think of it as a surname and also it just reminds me of the ‘Old Bailey’. Honestly it’s not a name I would even consider choosing.’
While another joked: ‘There were three Bailey’s in my daughters class. To be fair, there was a Chardonnay to balance it out.’
And a third said: ‘I’ve never taught a well behaved kid called Bailey.
‘Take what you will from that but I think it’s linked with naming your kid after an alcoholic drink to be fair.’
