Ten years ago, London-based songwriter Claire, 44, was languishing in an unhappy relationship and saw no way out. But a spiritual book taught her how to will her dreams of a perfect husband and careerinto existence. Here, she tells her story…
"As I walked through Venice with my boyfriend Ryan, I wondered why he was taking me on the longest walk in the world. Then, as we crossed a bridge, he suddenly stopped. “Take a look at this view,” he said.
When I turned around, he was down on one knee. “Will you marry me, Claire?”
After excitedly telling everyone we met that I’d got engaged, I remembered a journal entry I made before I met Ryan. I’d described a romantic trip to Italy with a mysterious man. I realised that this moment was what I’d been waiting for – I’d manifested my proposal without even knowing it.
Before meeting Ryan, I’d been in a 17-year relationship with a person who wasn’t right for me. During our time together, my confidence was at rock bottom. I worked at my ex’s business and had spent half my life with him.
It seemed like there was no way out.
Then, in 2011, my dad pulled me out of that relationship. Arriving at my house, he said, “You’re coming home with me and you’re never going back.” At 34, I returned to my parents’ home and my life began again.
The first thing I did was join Facebook. I began reconnecting with people and organised a coffee date with someone I’d known as a teenager.
As we caught up, my friend said she’d manifested her husband and encouraged me to look into the law of attraction. I’d never heard of it before but felt I had nothing to lose. After all, living with my parents, I’d gone from being a woman of 34 to a girl of 17 overnight.
I picked up a copy of The Secret by Rhonda Byrne and became hooked on the idea that positive thoughts can attract positive results. I bought a notebook and started writing down my dreams as if they’d already happened. I’d been in a girlband at school and still wrote songs as a hobby, so I scribbled, “I’ve got an amazing songwriting career.”
Within months, I found myself in a music publisher’s office, explaining how I wanted to go to a songwriting camp. In no time, I was at the camp in Denmark, where I discovered K-pop, J-pop and C-pop, the names given to Korean, Japanese and Chinese pop music. Songwriting became my job.
My career went from strength to strength and in October 2013 I attended another camp, where I jotted down my aspiration to write a song for K-pop group Girls’ Generation.
I wrote about my experience coming out of my relationship and called the song Indestructible . Eight months later, I got a call to say the band were going to record it. Soon, I was being flown to places like Japan and Sweden – and in 2017 I helped contribute songs to the girls’ album Holiday Night , which went to number one in 19 countries. It was unbelievable.
But it’s not just my career I’ve manifested. In the summer of 2012, I opened my journal and outlined my future husband. I knew exactly what I wanted, so I was very specific, describing how he’d be funny, in his thirties and a family man. He had to love dogs, too.
And after six months of online dating, I found Ryan. He ticked every box. After our first date, we messaged each other every day. I knew he was The One four days after we met, when I woke up to a message on my birthday that said, “Happy Birthday, treacle.”
A few months later, Ryan invited me to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. What he didn’t know was I’d written about that exact holiday in my journal a few years earlier. It was fate!
By July 2013, seven months after our first date, we’d moved in together – and by the October, we were engaged. We married the next year and went on to have our daughter Ella, now six, and our son Jack, now three.
While Ryan isn’t into the law of attraction, he is open-minded. I told him about manifestation a couple of months after we met. We joke about it a lot. When I was pregnant with Ella, I accidentally paid £5 for a parking ticket instead of £1. When I told Ryan, I joked, “Don’t worry, I’ll find £20 next week.” A few days later, at our local polling station, I found two £20 notes on the floor. We couldn’t stop laughing.
It wasn’t until we’d had the children that I told Ryan how I’d written about him. One evening, we went through my journals together and laughed at how similar he is to the dream man I’d described before meeting him.
Without the law of attraction, I wouldn’t have had the courage to go for things. When lockdown hit, I went from songwriter to full-time mum and began writing notes about a fashion brand with positive messaging that I wanted to manifest.
Then this year, Neon Army was born. I’m aiming to make it one of the world’s most successful fashion accessories brands.
The beauty of writing these journals, whether you choose to believe in the law of attraction or not, is that you can remind yourself what you really want, deep down. For me, it’s stopped me drifting from my goals. I can’t wait to see what the future holds."
How does the law of attraction work?
It’s a philosophy that claims our thoughts determine our reality – so positive thoughts create positive outcomes. By being conscious of your thoughts through journalling, using visualisation techniques and positive affirmations, and setting goals, you’ll manifest your dreams and ambitions.
