‘I was 300lb food addict and now I’m unrecognisable – but new habit cost me big’

A morbidly obese mum curbed her food addiction only for it to be “transferred” to compulsive clothes shopping – and spent a staggering $2,000 (£1600) in two months.

Whitney Pepper, 32, was 300lb (136kg) at her heaviest and would regularly indulge in takeaways and a platter of sugary foods.

But In October 2021, the cosmetologist from Lafayette, Louisiana, decided enough was enough after her once baggy, comfy clothes became skin tight.

After kicking her overeating habit and losing 20% of her body weight, Whitney had an unexpected side effect.

She claimed to “transfer” one addiction for another and started shopping compulsively.

The mum-of-three explained: “I absolutely experienced transfer addiction for a little while until I caught onto what I was doing.

“I spent about $2,000 within a two-month span on clothes, shoes and accessories.

"I sold my old clothes that I didn't fit and would donate others."

Whitney lost 60lbs (27kg) eating a low-carb diet, and in April 2022 she underwent a procedure which removed 80 per cent of her stomach.

She said: “I lost 60lbs in six months just eating low carbs and at that point, I proved to myself that I am in it for the long haul.

“I knew that if I continued down this road I would develop more serious conditions.”

“[So] I had my stomach taken out for portion control.”

After her weight loss surgery, Whitney lost a further 13lbs (6kg) and started working out five days a week.

The 32-year-old said: “I was eating anything protein-based, a lot of grilled chicken, fish, shrimp and steak.

“Lots of green vegetables and protein shakes throughout the day.

“I have completely lost all the weight I wanted to, now I am training to maintain the weight loss.”

Before losing weight Whitney would wear a size XXXL and US pant size between 24 and 26.

Now she is US pant size two and top wise wears between extra small and small.

While Whitney has an unshakeable hunger to keep off the weight, she still has days where she lacks morale.

She added: “Some days you are going to wake up and you will not have that fire about losing weight.

“If you stick with it long enough and take pictures once a week you have something to look back on as the weighing scale does not reflect your hard work.”
