For 20 years, stars have been entertaining the British public by allowing themselves to be covered in creepy crawlies – and in some cases, eating them – as they brave the Australian jungle to be crowned its king or queen.
For the last two years I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! has also occupied the Gwrych Castle in north Wales, where insects and spooky elements were still in full supply.
And fans of the show have been delighted by the news it is returning to our screens in 2023 for an All Stars series, set to see the return of some of the funniest and most controversial contestants from series past.
With rumours of sharp-tongued ex-model Janice Dickinson and valiant Fatima Whitbread making their returns to the reality TV show, fans have reminisced over some of the best and most shocking moments over the years.
Here, FEMAIL looks back at some of the confirmed and rumoured contestants for I’m a Celebrity All Stars, and the moments that sealed their places in I’m a Celebrity history…
Helen Flanagan
As an actress who found fame playing Rosie Webster in ITV soap Coronation Street, fans were unsure how Helen Flanagan would fare in the jungle when she became a campmate in 2012.
However, after viewers got wind she might be a little squeamish, they soon jumped onto a perceived weakness and selected her for the first Bushtucker Trial – in which she failed to retrieve any stars to provide meals for her campmates.
Sadly for the rest of the camp, viewers decided Helen would be the perfect choice for several consecutive trials, as she proclaimed: ‘I’m a celebrity, get me out of here’ as soon as they began.
Myleene Klass
During the 2006 series of I’m a Celeb, Myleene, who made it into the final, set pulses racing as she took a cold shower in her white bikini underneath the waterfall.
The former Hear’Say bandmate, who is a classically trained pianist and now hosts radio shows, showed off her enviable figure as she washed her hair, in what has become one of the most famous scenes in the show’s history.
The image was so iconic, it was even recreated by campmate Matthew Wright several series later, as he too donned a white bikini to jump in the shower.
Georgia Toffolo
Eventually crowned Queen of the Jungle in 2017, Georgia Toffolo might not have been known at all to many viewers – unless they were fans of Made in Chelsea, of course.
But during her time in the camp, ‘Toff’ wowed viewers with bravery as she gallantly took on bushtucker trials and became everyone’s friend in camp.
In particular, she formed a close bond with Stanley Johnson (father of former prime minister Boris)
Joe Swash
Former Eastenders actor and all-round nice chap Joe Swash charmed British audiences, who voted him as King of the Jungle in 2008.
But his time in the jungle certainly had its ups and downs, with Joe’s lowest moments broadcast on national television as he took on eating trials.
Asked to eat crocodile penis and testicles among other grim dishes, he warned presenters Ant and Dec he had a strong gag reflex – and viewers soon learnt he wasn’t exaggerating.
Poor Joe retched his way through the trial as the presenters tried (and failed) to hold in their laughter – but when he was finally crowned the winner of the series, some argued it all paid off.
Carol Vorderman
Maths whizz and presenter Carol Vorderman entered the jungle in 2016 as one of the biggest names of her series, having shot to fame on Channel 4 daytime show Countdown.
During her series, Carol showed off her stunning figure in bikinis that caught the attention of viewers, and struck up unlikely friendships with some of her campmates, including Diversity star Jordan Banjo.
After being the eighth celebrity to be booted out of the camp, Carol gushed over the younger campmates in her exit interview with Ant and Dec.
She said: “I’ve particularly loved the youngsters, they’re the age of my daughter – Scarlett (Moffatt), Joel (Dommett), Sam (Quek), Adam (Thomas) – I sort of looked on them in that kind of way.’
Gillian McKeith
It is no secret that the British public can spot weakness in reality TV contestants within seconds of seeing them in action – and after realising Gillian McKeith wasn’t a great lover of creepy crawlies, she was unsurprisingly selected by viewers to take on several bushtucker trials in a row.
The trials are usually filmed in advance of the programme airing, but sometimes the programme schedules trials live on air.
In the 2010 series, nutritionist Gillian, who had by this point suffered several terrifying trials, was told live by presenters Ant and Dec that she was once again the unlucky campmate selected for the live challenge.
Upon hearing this, Gillian appeared to faint in front of the camera, leading medic Bob to rush to her aid and give her oxygen – and causing Ant and Dec to cut to the advert break.
Andy Whyment
Many famous campmates on I’m a Celeb are imprinted in viewers’ memories for being controversial or unusual, but Andy Whyment entertained viewers in 2019 by simply being a thoroughly nice chap.
After entering the camp late alongside former Eastenders star Cliff Parisi, the Coronation Street actor made it all the way to the final two, before missing out on the winning spot to another Eastenders star, Jacqueline Jossa.
During his time in the camp Andy entertained viewers with his valiant efforts during bushtucker trials, including a joint challenge with Roman Kemp which saw the pair covered in gunge.
Amir Khan
Amir who starred on the hit show in 2017 said taking part in the series was ‘one of the best things’ he ever did.
The former boxer Amir Khan, 35, proved to be a favourite amongst the viewers in 2017 as he screamed with fear at the sight of creepy crawlies.
He and fellow contestant Iain Lee also secretly ate all the strawberries instead of sharing with campmates after winning the Dingo Dollar challenge.
Amir perplexed fans with his unusual musings while chatting to other campmates – including questioning whether women could be the prime minister.
Paul Burrell
Before entering the jungle, Paul Burrell was best known for being Princess Diana’s butler, who often spoke out and wrote about his friendship with the late Princess of Wales.
But after becoming a campmate in 2004, he soon became known for taking on perhaps the most famous bushtucker trial of all time, in which he had to put his arm into holes in a wall to retrieve stars – with the crevices filled with creepy crawlies.
The infamous words: ‘It’s a snake’ as the former butler’s eyes widened, before he groaned in fear will no doubt be imprinted in the memories of many viewers of the show, as Ant and Dec once again failed to hide their amusement.
Jordan Banjo
Winner of Britain’s Got Talent as part of the Diversity Dance Troupe in 2009, Jordan Banjo entered the jungle in 2016 where he ended up in ninth place.
During his time in the jungle, Jordan made plenty of friends, including an unlikely alliance with TV presenter and maths whizz Carol Vorderman.
The pair developed such a deep connection that Carol referred to him as her ‘son’ – and they are expected to be reunited in this year’s All Star competition.
Dean Gaffney
Another bushtucker trial that went down in I’m a Celeb history was the inaugural challenge Dean Gaffney had to undertake before being admitted into the camp.
As Ant and Dec told the former Eastenders star what awaited him, viewers could see the surprised on his face as it dawned on him this would not be an easy entrance into the series.
As Dean entered the ‘hairdressing salon’ in the Temple of Doom trial he was subjected to cockroaches swarming around his head as his limbs flailed around in the chair.
Despite very clearly being terrified, Dean managed to do a decent job of the trial, while Ant and Dec tried their very best to calm him down.
Shaun Ryder
Happy Mondays star Shaun Ryder seemed unfazed by most things in the Australian jungle – including the frightening creatures he was faced with.
His down-to-earth approach to the experience meant he was a winner with British viewers, who voted him runner-up in the 2010 series as he narrowly lost out on the crown to Stacey Solomon.
One of Shaun’s most memorable moments in the jungle was during a group trial, where several campmates had to retrieve stars from boxes filled with frightening beasts.
As the Mancunian music legend put his hand into a box, he was almost instantly bitten by a snake, which sunk its teeth deep into his flesh.
Stoic as ever, Shaun remained remarkably calm and kept his cool while he waited for medical help – but he managed to squeeze in a few curse words.
Janice Dickinson
Former model Janice Dickinson starred in the 2007 series of I’m a Celeb, and although she was from the US, she became a firm favourite with the British audience.
Although she did not make many friends among her campmates, who branded her ‘vile’, Janice delighted viewers with her sharp insults and steely determination when it came to bushtucker trials.
Although many expected the former model to come into the jungle fearful and timid, Janice proved everyone wrong and went on to finish the series in second place – losing out to King of the Jungle Christopher Biggins.
Fatima Whitbread
Retired athlete Fatima Whitbread showed viewers her steely side when she entered the jungle, as she appeared to fear absolutely nothing.
The former javelin thrower took on every challenge that came her way and gave them all 100%.
But during one trial, viewers were left horrified when Fatima had to put her head in a glass cage filled with cockroaches, during which one inset crawled right up her nose.
Medic Bob had to intervene as Fatima looked visibly distressed while she tried to eject the creature from her nose – leading to the medical team flushing it out.
