DEAR DEIDRE: ALTHOUGH my mum’s dog is her beloved companion, I am applying to send her to a care home where she can’t take pets – and I feel guilty.
I’m 49 and my mum is 87.
She’s becoming frail with age and when I noticed she was beginning to struggle with the stairs and day-to-day life, I made an application on her behalf to move her into a residential home.
The home is beautiful and she’ll be far more comfortable and well cared for. But the downside is that pets aren’t allowed.
My mum’s dog has been a great comfort to her after my dad died.
Separating them will be heartbreaking and I’m not sure she will ever forgive me when I break the news.

Perhaps you could take on the family dog and bring him/her to visit her regularly?
Don’t be too hard on yourself.
