Inside Princess Diana’s private quarters at Kensington Palace where she lived with Prince Charles, William and Harry

Princess Diana, who would have turned 61 today, was the undisputed style icon of the eighties style icon with her perfectly coiffed short hair, giant shoulder pads and pearl necklaces.

She also won the heart of the nation by showcasing a massive amount of empathy and tireless campaigning for others less fortunate than herself.

However, what you may not have realised about the devoted mother was that she also had incredible interior design skills. When she married Prince Charles in 1981 she was just 20 years old and shortly after she moved into Apartments 8 and 9 in Kensington Palace.

It was the here that she expressed her creative side by teaming up with renowned interior designer Dudley Poplak and they redecorated the three floors worth of rooms in a modern (back then) style with a traditional twist; both reflecting the forward-thinking tastes of the Princess and respecting the 17th century building.

The sitting room had pale yellow walls which were very fashionable at the time. As we can see from this picture there was a black high gloss grand piano which is the perfect place for showcasing lots of family pictures.

The piano stool is green velvet which compliments the wall colour nicely.

There is stucco-style decoration in a floral pattern around the windows and a yellow window seat for Diana or the children to gaze out across the palace grounds.

On the wall hangs a highly ornate mirror in a gilded frame… they are the royal family after all!

The other living room also doubled as Diana's office and it is very girly in the traditional sense of the word; with duck egg blue patterned wallpaper and frilly curtains.

Behind her desks are two landscapes of boats out at sea and the room is flooded with an abundance of natural light thanks to the large windows, that again have window seats.

From this angle we can see better the millennial pink sofas with fringe detailing. She also has a very fluffy white carpet which looks good enough to nap on, a marble fireplace and a large bookcase.

Prince William and Harry's nursery was designed by Dragons and Walton Street, a luxury children's design company based in Chelsea.

The room has lovely soft cream walls which are in contrast to the apple print carpet. The two young boys obviously have traditional wooden toys, rather than plastic.
