Inside the TRIC Awards – from This Morning snub to backhanded praise for Meghan Markle

Every year the TRIC awards celebrate the best and brightest working in TV and Radio today.

The Television and Radio Industries Club once again headed to the swanky Grosvenor House Hotel in central London and a whole host of actors, presenters and celebs turned out for the bash, which OK! were a media partner for.

Stars including TalkTV host Piers Morgan, Capital Breakfast presenter Roman Kemp, who scooped up the gong for Radio Personality, and A Place In The Sun’s Jonnie Irwin were all smiles as they took to the pink carpet.

They were among the celebs battling it out for one of the coveted awards, which are voted for by the general public.

This Morning Snub

Notable in their absence, however, were the This Morning crew, who are usually a staple of the event.

The flagship programme lost out on the OK! Daytime award for the first time in four years, as the voting public opted for A Place In The Sun instead.

Fans suspected that Holly Willoughby, 34, was slyly avoiding an awkward run in with her former colleague Eamonn Holmes, though a source close to the star said she only missed the do due to “prior commitments”.

Paul O'Grady is remembered

Regular This Morning contributor Martin Lewis did make an appearance at the TRIC awards, as his show The Martin Lewis Money Show was nominated for Best Factual Programme.

Martin was just pipped to the post by late comedian Paul O’Grady’s For The Love of Dogs.

He didn’t seem too upset by the loss, though, and paid tribute to the star via his Twitter: “Lost in the TRIC awards today, best factual programme – but don't mind as it was to the late, great Paul O'Grady for the love of dogs. A deserved tribute.”

Host Rob Rinder also paid tribute to Paul as he said: "ll of us will be feeling this loss in the room, this rich, joyous, limitless unique energy that was the late, the profoundly great Paul O'Grady.."

Piers Morgan namechecks Meghan Markle

Other winners included Piers Morgan, who picked up the award for Interview of The Year for his chat with footie legend Cristiano Ronaldo.

The unauthorised interview made headlines around the world and lead to him being dropped by his premier league club.

In his acceptance speech, Piers couldn’t resist another dig at his longtime nemesis Meghan Markle, The Duchess of Sussex.

“I want to thank Meghan Markle because, if you think about it, without her contribution to my career I would never have gone to TalkTV, I would never have been standing here with this award,” the 58 year old joked on stage, leaving the audience flabbergasted.

Piers had another awkward moment when he realised his gong would be presented by Channel 5 presenter Dan Walker, who Piers recently accused of “milking” a bike accident.

Piers joked that his “initial pain” at having to take the award from Dan was eventually “overtaken by the reality of the enormous pain that he would be suffering in having to present it to me so thank you, Dan.”

As Piers left the stage, Dan couldn’t resist a swipe of his own and sensationally shouted “f**k off” at his TV rival.

Nigel Farage gets booed

Piers may not have had the best reception at the awards, but it still seemed friendlier than Nigel Farage’s, who was brutally booed by the audience after he won the News Presenter award for his work on GB News, which recently divided viewers by hiring Peter Andre.

He hit back at the hecklers as he said that the “establishment media” doesn’t appreciate him, but said that his victory showed that the “people do.”

He then thanked his fans for their “patience and persistence” in voting for him.
